Forums - Microsoft - Is Fable II really an RPG?

d21lewis said:
In Fable 2, eating food makes you fat. Making relationships effect how people treat you. You can marry anybody. You can raise a family. You can be good or evil. You can buy a house. You use experience to grow the way you want to grow (magic, strength, techniquesz0 Pretty much, you can do whatever you want. You can even choose your ending.

Basically, Fable 2 is more of an actual Role Playing Game than most games that fall under the traditional definition of the word.

Nice points.

@Torrilian and Onyx.

. Don't hurt me. It's just then when I look at gameplay video's they seem alot more like 3rd person shooters than anthing. I don't have either game, so I really don't know much about the special game michanics, or level up system in either one....

It all depends on what RPG is defined as.

You could easily argue that pretty much all games from Doom to NFS to Mario are RPGs in the sense that you play the role of a character.

Correct.

Incorrect... those games allow you to play a character that has a role... diffrent from playing the role of a character... There will always be limits to video games that are not there for PnP games, but Fable 2 comes closer to what an RPG really is then Final Fantasy or Grandia do.  I'm not saying that they are not RPGs, but I'm saying there is a line and on one side is Aventure games and on the other side is RPGs and they are easily mixed together in the middle.

RPGs have engaging stories. Fable 2 does not have an engaging story. Therefore...

casual rpg .... and really the best in that set... i enjoyed it

It's the meager social aspects that make this an arpg. Orb collecting for exp, and powerups are simply elements.

The definition of an rpg will always be about choice within social interactions, be they NPC or PC.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

An rpg is a game where you are in the role of a character and have some freedom in choosing how that character turns out. FFVII is *less* of an rpg than fable II, its just that we're all used to leveling people up to 99 and seeing attack and defense and max hp go up.

 Yes. I like this definition.

I don't know what the hell an RPG is supposed to be anymore... it seems to be all in the eyes of the beholder now.

It's a western RPG, much like Zelda.

Zelda is in no way a Western RPG. It fails in two respects, it isn't an RPG and it's not from the west.
