Forums - Sony - Why wouldn't 2008 be the Year of the PS3 if....

Why are you people always fighting about sales? You can't play sales you cant enjoy sales. Sales are the ONLY weak point of PS3,but PS3 did outsold 360 this year. Only people who likes to talks about sales when it comes to console are wii owners since wii is selling good. i know this web site is about sales but if you wanna talk about console forget about sales. PS3 beats Wii in EVERYTHING but not in sales.Graphics ,games, multimedia ,online...

Probably because most people on a SALES site would say the sales of a system would = if it is the year of it, and this year the sales go Wii > 360 > PS3

In sales Ford >>>> McClaren Mercedes, Does that make Ford Cars better? Hmmmmmmmm

But take the 360 and PS3, they are similar AND the 360 outsold the PS3

They arent similar at all..

Please tell me you(')r(e) joking(.)

There is no 90 minute cutscene in MGS4.. not even the ending which is easily the longest cutscene is 90 minuts, its around 40 minutes, and thats the LONGEST one. Everything else is much shorter, honestly if you try to complain about cutscenes, go and play Kingdom hearts 2.

Even if MGS4 doesn't have a 90 minute cutscene it still has too many cutscenes I watched my brother play the first two chapters over a friends house and with the installs and cutscenes it has more down time then actual game time.

I was never complaining about the cut scenes.  Read my posts carefully.  I merely described why it got a bad rep from reviewers.  And yes, the longest cutscene is 90 minutes.  Perhaps you accidentally skipped it, or just did not realize it was that long.

According to many first hand experiences the final cut scenes after the end boss was an hour and twenty minutes long.  So there was at least an 80 minute cut scene.

@Snake
Since when did PS3 outsold outsell the 360 this year?

Does this look like console of the year to you?

The holidays are the most important time of the year.  The Wii is up 80% year over year for the holidays.  The 360 is up 47%.  The PS3 is down 15%.

If you want to claim that as some sort of victory, go right ahead.  You would have to be delusional though.

PS3 had the best software in 2008 yes, and arguably will have in 2009, but that doesnt make either year the year of the ps3

I wasn't saying Banjo was a bad game, unless you are referring to Mr. forevercloud. I just merely was implying that it wasn't a sales giant like Gears, Fable, and L4D were.

Even though it might not be a sales giant its numbers are pretty decent and so far its been selling at a steady pace and its nowhere near being a bomb in two weeks time it should surpass both Haze and Too Human in sales.

if Banjo is indeed selling like you say, then it should relieve itself of FLOP status in due time. As of right now it doesn't appear to be that good. If it reaches the 500k mark it is a success in my book. Regardless, PS3 had more games, and more highly praised games then the competition. I mean look at MGS4 and LBP, these are 2/3rds of the most critically acclaimed titles in a decade. GTAIV, MGS4, and LBP are the cream of the crop right now.

Who cares about critical acclain fun factor and enjoyment is really what pushes game sales.  I'm not saying MGS4 is a bad game but if I really want to look at an endless amount of cut scenes I rather watch a real movie.  Also until Sony comes out with a game that cost $90US and sells over 13million copies they are nowhere near the geniuses that the people at Nintendo are.

Please tell me you did not just attempt to use that claim? That is the lowest form of prejudice commonly used by a disgruntle fanboy. I am going to take that as a joke and not hold it against you, for its not even true.

MGS4 doesnt have nearly as many cutscenes as most RPGs today, and lasts about twice as long if played at a pace. I compare MGS4 to RPGs becuase they both emphasize story and cinamatics. No one complains about the mounds of text in those games but its a problem here? I dont hear people complaining about Fable 2. That is because There is so much stuff to do in that game it would make your head spin. Same goes for MGS4, in actuallity MGS4 out matches Fable in pure stuff to do. There are multiple paths to every mission, sights to see that Kojima has hidden within the game, badges to collect, online play that is phenomenal. The game outshines anything else on the market right now, best believe it.

And as someone pointed out earlier, sales doesn't always equal quality....

I guess you missed the part where MGS4 isn't supposed to be an RPG.  It's a shooter.  One with cutscenes that run up to 90 minutes for ONE cut scene.  That's longer than most movies these days.  Much longer than any RPG cut scene.  The point is, RPG players go into the game expecting the cut scenes.  Shooter fans, even MGS fans, were not expecting that much cinema attention.  Thus why it got some bad rep from reviewers.

 Please tell me your joking

Ok, "I'm joking."  Unfortunately what I said and then you bolded, is true.

@blazinhead
They don't use the Elite model and change it.... I'm not sure what you are talking about.  The Core and Premium were all that existed.  Then they added the Elite with a new color, bigger HDD, and a $80 higher price.  The Core and Premiums each eventually changed slightly and dropped $100.  The Elite dropped $80.

Isnt that what they did with PS3 ? Barring colour of course

in terms of overall the wii has been the system of the year for 06,07,08 in terms of HD i don't think ps3 has had it's year yet maybe this year it would of started but with the 360 blowing passed the 8 mill ahead mark i wouldn't call it the year of the ps3

I'm sorry, but you are a fanboy.  And the criteria never changed.  The 360 had more hardware sales in 07.  The 360 had more hardware sales in 08.  You are the one trying to change the criteria or see things differently.  You are desperately trying to hold on to some positive fact about your only console.  A fanboy.  Also, you keep saying the PS3 library was better in 08.  That is a major opinion, and even if it were true, the amount of total quality AAA games on the PS3 is still well behind the 360.

@blazinhead89
The $600 model was cut to $500.  Then that same model at $500 was dropped to $400 and changed slightly.  The smaller previous $400 model was discontinued.  Thus the $600 console dropped to $400 in a place of a years time.

The "360 is System of the Year!" articles started just after the 360 price cut. We did not even have the time to see whether the 360 was going to truly outsell the PS3 this year. I believe the price dropped around October(?) and the sales went above PS3's like a week afterwards. The Articles in question started surfacing in the nxt two weeks!!!! All the "PS3 is dying!" "PS3 fails!" "360 now outselling PS3!" started coming in by the bucket load. Need proof of that? just visit N4G.com, where I get all my gaming news from. The site is SWAMPED with all these articles dated back to that initial time period. So how could that claim be justified only a week or so after the 360 surge? Explain that to me please!

And I am not a fanboy, but indeed a fan of PS3! I just wish the PS3 could get the same level of respect from the media that is handed to the 360. 360 has gotten the golden ticket this gen and gets away with EVERYTHING, things that would have been plastered on Sony's forehead if they had done it. PS3 never gets recognition for what they do right by anyone but the fans, and it is stomped into the ground when they do something wrong by the media.
