Forums - Gaming - Whoa, has Square Enix finaly figured out what is wrong with all JRPGS?

It's somewhat logical for JRPG:s to have young character, considering the character developement and story.
Usually one of the aspects is to explore the world, the characters in similar fashion as the gamer for the first time you play (through) the game. Being a teenager who doesn't yet know a shit, is a lot more logical character to enter a world to explore, than a guy in his fourties or fifties, who is well aware of the world he lives in. Also, considering that you start the game as a weak character and end up being a powerful warrior/wizard in the end, it's quite illogical for a fifty years old guy to become one, if he isn't that already.

@Faxanadu: What's the point in fantasising about them in that case? It somehow cuts the edge out of it.

Ei Kiinasti.

Vaan pannaan jalalla koreasti.

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

Laughing My Funny Ass OFF.

You do realize the age rate for most of them has increased to 18 to some what EARLY 20's.

There hasnt been a 15 to 16 year old lead character in a JRPG in a long while.

For great example the lead in White Knight is 18 while the princesess is like 20.

And From Star Ocean 4 Mavrick is 21 while the girl is 18.

So...Its not that bad anymore, atleast now there just young adults. :P

your ass is funny ?

Op... i dunno XD i dunno what to respond. I guess i'm not the biggest rpg player ever.. I can say that as long as the story is immersive it's all good.... well usually.. but if they keep them atleast around 20 it should be nice.

Check out my game about moles ^

@Kuu- dude i mean for the HD consoles lol, not ports or handhelds.

And whats a persona? O.o

....There was gaming before the HD consoles

I'm going to go hide now before the real JRPG fans come in here and kill us all.

I know that but i mean for modern times, the ages of the lead characters HAS infact gone up, even if it is only about 3 to 5 years, at the very least you playing as young adults.

Hell isnt characters like Dante Immortal or something?

And Crisis Core's Zack...even though he starts off as a 16 year old by the time the game ends his around 18 to 21 just as another example.

I'm pretty sure nearly all of jRPGs' main characters were atleast 20 in the PS1/N64 generation. It does seem characters of jrpgs ave gotten younger this gen, and it doesn't help the fact that most of them look like 14 yr girls.

I wouldnt know, because i got started with my JRPGs around Final Fantasy VII's time area.

Of course cloud was 21 if im not mistaken right? Tifa was 20 if memory serves... and sephiroth was like what? 27?

Anyways, point across now that you put it that way agreed, but i think the 15 and 14ish days are over because that was in last gen.

This gen however the age bias is around 18-21 range.

Find me one game this gen on an HD console with the main character or co-character below 18, because i havent found any. and im still looking.

Blue Dragon. The main characters are 14-16, and they look way younger than that.

Edit: Or are we talking SE games only?

I agree with the article for the most part. There are so many parts of a game that you have to bring together to make it a GREAT game. Characters, gameplay, story, and in some cases graphics. The age thing is a great point as well. Now that I'm older and still into RPGs, I really find some of the dialogue and attitude of the protagonists REALLY annoying.

Take Tales of Vesperia as an example. Who DOESN'T love Raven? Old guy, lots of life experience, hilariously perverted :P. He's my favourite character in the game, even though he's 15-20 years older than I am, I can relate to him more than Estelle who's really boring and dull since it's such an overused role.

20 is a good age for main protagonists, I seriously would not expect FF to sell millions in Japan is the main protagonist was in it's 30's.

They've gotten younger. Celes was the youngest non-child character in FF6 and she was eighteen - everyone else was from 20-30. One was actually over 70.

The further back you go in the genre the older the heroes used to be.

Also how about that Persona series?

Wathhhh!!!!!!!!!!! Persona its one of the gratest series in the RPG world, its like i ask you, what is Resistance?

For people, who like older cast, try Lost Oddysey. How old is main hero? One thousand years? That´s some experience.

But it´s true, that I like older charakters too. Chars like Jade Curtiss, Auron, and like.

this age thing is a good point....

For starters, 18-20 is an age where you can't be the big badass besides the intelectual immaturity, there is also the physical one.... you'll physically peak at 24-27, so main characters that are supposed to be saving the world on strengh alone should fall more in that zone.

Intelectually, it makes no sense to have the 16yold wiz super inteligent kid.... a 35 yold would have more maturity and most likely better physical capacity.

In all, I believe JRPGs should have characters ranging from 23 to 40 with occasional exceptions (great wizard X or the teen bearing the sign (like Link), but definitely not the whole party at 15-20...

I think Lost Odyssey was very refreshing for not falling into this trap. Not only with old ass Kaim, but also with Jansen. They were able to have him progress and grow without having to start as some whiny teenager. And he's hilarious!

Auron is one of my very favorite Final Fantasy characters. Although I don't know that I can properly give Square any credit for him, since he's just a ripoff of Toshiro Mifune.
