It's somewhat logical for JRPG:s to have young character, considering the character developement and story.
Usually one of the aspects is to explore the world, the characters in similar fashion as the gamer for the first time you play (through) the game. Being a teenager who doesn't yet know a shit, is a lot more logical character to enter a world to explore, than a guy in his fourties or fifties, who is well aware of the world he lives in. Also, considering that you start the game as a weak character and end up being a powerful warrior/wizard in the end, it's quite illogical for a fifty years old guy to become one, if he isn't that already.

@Faxanadu: What's the point in fantasising about them in that case? It somehow cuts the edge out of it.
