Forums - Nintendo - Theory: Why Nintendo Has Been Holding Back

Nintendo have held back to an extent, due to demand exeeding the supply, but not to an extent it's seen in the OP.
Also, Nintendo did release one big core game for the christmas, which was Animal Crossing (nearing 10M on DS).

The biggest reason for the delays propably is Wii Motion Plus. After the announcement of WM+, the core propably wants the support to every game (and Nintendo of course wants every game to support it to maximise sales of the peripheral). Animal Crossing was a game that couldn't make much use for WM+, while Wii Music would definately had benefited from it, but it was left without WM+ for two propable reasons: Nintendo wouldn't had anything for E3 and because Wii Music required lots of work to program the instruments for the songs, WM+ would have required basically the whole game being redone (also, Nintendos music team was used heavily in making the game, it would have bottlenecked the whole EAD for their musical team being on remaking Wii Music).
We'll propably see what Nintendo have been up to after WM+ comes out.

AC is casual in the same way MK is casual.

I seperate Non-game type casuals from casual.

Both of those games can be loved be core gamers who are not graphics whores, but they are very appealling to the casual mainstream.

End of 2009 Predictions (Set, January 1st 2009)

Wii- 72 million   3rd Year Peak, better slate of releases

360- 37 million   Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak

PS3- 29 million  Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut

i think its more save to bet they released their big titles already.
which is true since mario galaxy, kart and brawl are out
same for the wii games, music, fit and sport.

whats net galaxy2, brawl2, sport2 etc etc
but of course a second way it's always comming.
maybe star fox or something like that

i agree with this post, nintendo already released all their big titles, but they could make more sequels and make the core gamer happy.

A new F-Zero shouldn't be too far off.

Heavens to Murgatoids.

@BigJon: Casual mainstream? Ohh...

Basically we have two kinds of audiences, core, which is the existing one and blue ocean, which is the new audience.
With the classification you're using, you're basically stating that "the games i don't like, are casual". Even if we think of pick-up-and-play games being "casual",Animal Crossing doesn't fit the category. AC being a life simulation game, just like Sims, it essentially is an RPG.

Ei Kiinasti.

Eikä Japanisti.

Vaan pannaan jalalla koreasti.

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

Zelda, Pikmin, and Starfox (well hopefully) are all in the works, but there is one problem; they aren't finished yet. Nintendo can't make all their games at once, they simply put emphasis on the one's they felt would be the highest priority and fit the best within Wii's life cycle.

I doubt we will see Donkey Kong (a non-barrel blast) or Kid Icarus. I'd like to see a Donkey Kong platformer put I really doubt Nintendo will make that happen.

dont get me wrong, I love MKWii, I guess a better way to put is they are traditional casual games. Back in the PSone and PS2 days they would be considered casual for sure. Not so much anymore I guess.

@BigJon: I was only meaning the term, not what you tried to say.
MKWii should be considered as a bridge title, a game that appeal both, new and old audience. It's not even supposed to be categorized to only one category by the old and new split.

I know what you mean by "casual", but notice that you're basically using internet memes. At the time of the last two gens, term "casual" was close to non-existant, or even before that, when the games were labeled either as "games i like" or "games i dislike". Terms, which equal "hardcore" and "casual" these days.

more I think about it, your right about the casual thing, I do remember gamers reffering to the types of games we now call casual as kiddy games.

This is all part of Nintendo's implementation of the blue ocean strategy. They HAD to completely change their approach after last gen. Nintendo will eventually cater to the smaller 'hardcore' audience. They simply don't need to at the moment. I'll be surprised if Nintendo don't have a steady stream of quality Wii titles dropping in 2010-2011.

Playing: Borderlands(great co-op,HUGE amount of content),Too Human(better late than never lol),Saints Row 3(Penetrator ftw),Minecraft 360,Harry Potter Lego.

Patiently waiting for:  Tomb Raider, Borderlands 2

Nintendo has not gone casual, its gone non gamer. The Industy has been casual for years now. Why do you think reviewers can get away with bashing a game for having a learning curve. When you hear a "gamer" complaining about a game "being hard for the sake of hardness" or that "the devs are punishing the player" you know we have a casual on our hands. Every hardcore gamer has met that noob who always bitched about a game when he lost or died when it was obvious he just sucked at it and didn't want to take the time to learn the game. Thats what a casual is. He's that guy who only plays the games that are popular. He's that guy who starts cussing you out on xbox live when you own him. He's that guy who only plays games on one system and then some how just knows that *insert company here* makes the best games even though he's never touched any other games. And above all he's that guy who jacks off to 3D graphics and would never pay full price for a game with 2d graphics.......unless is suddenly became cool to like 2d graphics again.

If you aren't embracing the challenge and looking for new experiences in gaming then you are not a hardcore gamer. There's nothing wrong with being casual, if you don't take gaming seriously thats cool, just shut the hell up.

Please explain to me why (one of) the most hardcore game of this gen is made by Nintendo. If you don't believe me try Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn and you'll be crying for help in no time (and that's a good thing).
