Gran Turismo 5 can't do 3 million?
Gran Turismo 4, the worst selling full game, did 9.59 million
GT5 Prologue, essentially a demo, has sold 2.6 million and counting.

God of War is more less a hardcore series so it should probably sell 2.5 million but honestly even if there is a lot of hype I really doubt that it will get to 3 million. The only possible way would be that Sony pushes it more than any other game during next year, through bundles or through the best hits line. I`m expecting, if launched durind Q4 2009, 1.5-2 million till the end of 09, with about 500k copies sold during the rest of its lifetime. Many gamers bought the first 2 because of the gore, and many of those people were casual gamers, people that won`t spend more than $200 to play that game. The final fantasies, gran turismo and probably killzone 2 are a given, the other games no way. |
God of War II has outdated Others numbers. From IGN's Top 25 PS2 Games list (GoW was at number 4):
The original God of War might not have enjoyed the sales of the second game (though it did quite nicely in its own right), but it laid the groundwork for all future iterations to come and few series actually offer that level of solid bedrock to build off of. Angsty hero who slaughtered his own? Check. Progressive system for unlocking new stuff and becoming even more powerful? Check. Confronting enemies in their own domains and squaring off against them when they're a good 10 times your size? Check. Yeah, God of War is pretty much awesomeness incarnate.
And according to Wikipedia, it sold 2 million copies by July 2007. I'm pretty sure it's crossed 3 million by now.
Oh, and God of War III is on a new console, and in High Definition. Those always sell well.

You need to take a heavy rain check (haha, I just noticed my subliminal advertising :p).
Uncharted reached 2.4 mil with an atrocious launch and 0 adverts.
If Killzone 2 opens with your suggested 350k and is advertised on tv (which is a guarantee, considering how Sony have promised to get hardcore with their marketing in 2009), how will it fail to get any further than 1.5 mil LTD?
Even if it somehow sold a pitiful 11k in America and 12k in Europe weekly, it would hit 1.5 mil exactly 50 weeks after launch.
Anyway, back to the thread topic:
GT5 and FFVXIII are absolute locks.
Then I'd be very confident of KZ2 surpassing 3 mil.
I'm not sure about God of War 3. It seems its strongest continent is America, where the PS3 hasn't been hugely successful. I'd say this will probably be between 2 and 2.5 mil after one year, and then maybe dribble over the 3 mil mark after 2 years. Or I could be totally wrong and a huge Christmas tv campaign could ensure a huge opening followed by decent sales week in, week out.
Uncharted 2, hmm... really don't know. On the one hand, a lot of sequels don't outsell their predecessor. On the other hand, Among Thieves' opening will definitely be a lot larger than the first. Still, even then it will need good legs. I'm 66% sure it won't hit 3 mil. I hope I'm wrong though!
inFamous I really can't see hitting 3 million. I think it'll probably do 1.3 mil LTD. Then again, inFamous could be the next 'Uncharted', a la slow opening but glorious legs. But I'm fairly confident of 1.3 mil LTD.
I'd say 'no' to WKC, Trico and Heavy Rain. Unless Trico turns out to be designed with great mainstream appeal. Just don't know anything about it really.
I say Heavy Rain and White Knight Chronicles will cross 1 million. inFamous and Trico will cross 2 million. KZ2 and GoWIII, like I've said, will cross 3 million. Versus XIII will cross 4 million. GT5 will cross 8 million.
By the time everything is said and done, the following PS3 exclusives will have reached 3 million sales.
Final Fantasy Versus XIII
God of War III
Gran Turismo 5
Gran Turismo 5: Prologue
Killzone 2
LittleBigPlanet
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
Resistance: Fall of Man
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
Resistance 2 could reach it if bundled heavily as well as Warhawk if downloads are included.

well you have to consider that sequals usually never sell more than the first, I'm sure you can whip out some example to prove me wrong though, but for the most part (and no I'm not talking about a sequal or next game in series on a new system. has to be same system if you bring up an example) they dont. Oh and also the first one is/was bundled and you can't gurantee that this next one will. (I know it was bundled at least at some time, I saw the bundle when i was in stores, and that was during christmas time and black friday). SO if the first one isn't there yet I woulnd't jump to the sequal being a lock.
And to OP list, I agree with most of your accesment except God of War 3. I don't believe the first two where that huge sellers, I mean 1st one was above 3 mil, but second just below if memory serves correct. And so far on history the HD games haven't done as well as their PS2 counterparts did.
And also a bit iffy on Killzone 2. Would have figured it woudl for sure with since it seems any game with a soldier holding a gun seems to be gobbled up by millions on the 360 at least. But just recently with how Resistance 2 did I am not so sure if Iwould put a peg on for sure anymore on this PS3 exclusive.
The Final Fantasy, Gran Turismo are basic givens cause they are 10 mil or more always on system so even with taking a new gen dip or lose of fans ect it still will hit it easy. But I never like to expect the same sales for a game that it saw last gen on a new console, and one not too popular at the moment either.
Versus will not sell under 3 million, simply impossible and no I do not need a time machine for I have this wonder thing called a brain. -_-
GT5 I said easily. Easily as in 3 million sales first week easily.

seriously,gtfo !
that's like saying gta4 will not pass 3 million without bundles
