Forums - Sales Discussion - Will the PS3 fall below 15% marketshare in Americas in 2009?

I think people are expecting the PS3 to magically start selling loads from next week in the quiet time of the year. If the ratios we have seen since september continue into 2009 the PS3 will be falling fast and hard. I just dont buy into this belief the PS3 will gain from last year in a recession where so many people are being sacked worldwide is a joke.

If the ps3 is $299 it should gain market share

It's a slight possibility. But I doubt it. I think you will see a slight increase in PS3 sales. So it might stay at around 17-20%. I doubt it will pass that though. In the end it just does not get the boosts it needs... When it does it just doesn't last long enough for much of an increase overall.

Boycotting the following:

1. Yoshi: He ate my car and spit out a toaster.

2. Igglybuff: Totally false advertisement. You can have as many as you like they don't buff nothing.

3. the Terms Hardcore/Softcore... We're talking Video Games. Not Porn.

4. The term Casual as relates to Gamers: We make them sound like outsider's that happen to play games.  If that were the case they'd own a PS3.

5. Donuts.... Beacause I drink Beer...... and the biggest fan of Donuts hates Beer.

6. Boycotts: Their so lame.

leo-j is right. If Sony decides to do a 100$ price cut, sales will start to go in favor of the PS3. The 360 price-cut proves that. As soon as it got the price cut, sales os the 360 started to rise. If the PS3 does this aswell, sales will be in favor of the PS3 once again.

It's a given at this rate, things will hopefully turn around, like Spring 2008, and I completely agree with the posts above me regarding a price cut.

You know its not complusary for a company to drop its products price every year right? Sony need to make a profit sometime you know.
AND Sony ISN`T droping price already For MORE than 1 year. =)
Now you GET IT??? :)

Yeah, tell me how do you think Sony are going to pull a price cut off? and still make profit on the PS3?

I don't know whether a $299 PS3 would make profit or loss, but in a few months, following cost to manufacturers drop of HDD and BD, a $299 PS3 will gain or lose roughly the same as a $199 XB360 Arcade. If the latter is feasible and sustainable, so is the former, you must live with this, you don't wanna pass for a delusional Sony hateboy, do you?

Except you're forgetting exchange rates, which don't affect Microsoft in this case.

This is true. But they can't afford a pricecut right now and since less than 10% of customers buy more than one console per generation, it's losing potential customers every week.

Current-gen game collection uploaded on the profile, full of win and good games; also most of my PC games. Lucasfilm Games/LucasArts 1982-2008 (Requiescat In Pace).

well i dont think it will dip below that.

ps3 should have some interesting pricing in 2009, sony wont just sit back and do nothing.

so it will deffo sell more in 2009 than in 2008 overall, but out of the 2 it will be harder for sony due to recession, with stunning titles in 2009 with highly probable price cuts ps3 will have a fine year in 2009.

Well they have so far? Sony might not have a choice but to sit back and do nothing, if they can't justify a pricecut to shareholders then its unlikely there will be one.
