Forums - Sony - People are never going to see LBP as a success

Yeah, I think it is only considered a failure because the hype around it... it was supposed to be the "big one". It was THE GAME, that was going to catapult Sony into the "casual" market dominance... well, at least that was the plan.

I still haven't bought or played it, but all my clan-mates have it and were playing it when it first came out.

I guess I never bought it for two reasons really. First so many great game came out at the same time as it... and secondly, I never really figured out what the game was about. Everyone always told me, "just get it, it's great, I can't explain it".

I imagine I'll get it one of these days, just not in a big hurry.

It failed at being a successful pioneer in bringing casual gamers and new owners to the ps3 (which is what the ultimate plan for it was), but it has succeeded on its own merits as an individual game

Ok, the POLL.
How much LBP must sell to be a success???
Say the number people. :)

As I said in my post above, LBP as an individual game is already a success (from my point of view).. but it doesn't matter how many copies LBP sells, to be a success in terms of their expectations of it being the gateway to hardware sales boosts all around, that would require evidence that people are buying a lot more ps3s due to this game.. which clearly isn't happening YET (the reason for this can be whatever you want, whether it be price, economy or price)

No matter how good the game does commercially (1.3 million sold in 8 weeks), or Critically (metacritic if 95) the game will never be seen as a success.  It's a shame too, since the game is so freaking awesome.

This community would rather downplay the game's success, and call the game a failure because of the hype (not the game's fault), rather than look at it on it's own merits, a new IP, which sold really well on the PS3 and has that high of a metacritic average.  We'd rather look at this game as not a success, and continue playing Generic Shooter A, Madden 2020, and Traditional turned based JRPG 1,922,498, instead of praising a new IP for doing something different and what some would call innovative.

So I am never going to defend the game again, and neither should you

It's a success commercially, and critically, and that's all that matters.

Hurray !!!!

Pft, quit whining. I think the game is already successful. It might not even come close to the expectations of some of its fans, but such is life.

Besides, there are way more thread defending LBP and attacking people who have anything bad to say about it than there are threads criticizing it. This type of aggressive defence is kinda patchetic. =/

Yes but was that a fair expectation? I mean that type of market just doesn't spend $400 on a console.

Would someone please tell me how LBP is innovative. This is what annoys me about Sony fanboys they constantly say LBP is innovative yet I have never heard a good argument for how it is. So it's innovative because it's using physics to solve puzzles? Erm yea that's been done. It's innovative because users create levels? Been done. Customisable characters? Been done.

The only thing it has done which is innovative is done it within a 2d setting, of course even then there have been simpler games doing this for ages. Innovation is not taking existing ideas and putting them in a different genre. It is coming up with new ideas.

As to whether LBP is a commerical success it's hard to say. In the Uk the game's price has been slashed, you can get it for half price already. It's also being bundled. So you would also have to say Marvel Ultimate Alliance on the 360 was a huge commerical success. Did LBP do as expected? Definetly not. The amount of advertising, show time dedicated to the game etc shows that sony were expecting this to be HUGE, it's done well but they certainly couldn't use Sackboy as a mascot. LBP was meant to be one of Sony's big games this holiday season. It is performing well under the big games on other platforms.

Oh and DMJ you only later changed your ''LBP will be HUGE'' to not mean sales when you saw the sales. People over the age of 5 don't use the word HUGE for fun. If you meant that you would have said AMAZING or INCREDIBLE. Huge obviously related to sales.

Turkish says and I'm allowed to quote that: Uncharted 3 and God Of War 3 look better than Unreal Engine 4 games will or the tech demo does. Also the Naughty Dog PS3 ENGINE PLAYS better than the UE4 ENGINE.

Amen.

I certainly have some pages bookmarked where "some" people and "a mod" said it would be lucky if it sold 500 k LOL?
it is a success and I hope it will sell more
finally, we can't just forget some of the other predictions claiming the game will sell a lot more than that but it doesn't matter anyway

 you mean....

Garcian Smith said: Anyway, I'm estimating under 100k first week worldwide, and maybe 500k lifetime.

twesterm said: Also, I don't think the game will actually bomb like say Zack and Wiki did. It will probably sell something in the area of 600k copies and eventually develop into a small ittle niche community. Sadly with the advertising and time spent on this game, 600k copies won't make them any money.

Undying said: We all know the game will most likly be great, but as history has taught us great=/= great sales.

Is there even a market for LBP? Will the game be a run away sucess? Lets take off our fanboy hats and really think about it.

I don't see this game doing very well. Who is the demographic for this game? Kids? Adults? Casual gamers? Hardcore gamers? Are there enough of that demographic on the PS3? Something just tells me that this game will not do well.

First week sales 100k

Life time 300k

Is 300k a flop for this game?

and I didn't even have iot bookmarked it was just a quick 5 minute search. Now imagine if I really felt like going through the thread especially before the "lbp will be huge" threads everday talking about how lbp will flop because they cant see appeal or the game looks dull.

lool at those prediction,,but i m sure there were some PS3 fans with unrealistic expectations as well. (5 million ltd)

crow served ;)

5 million LTD isnt unrealistic, if the game holds up rather well, 5 million might happen, its unlikely but who knows.

lol your post wreaks of desperation of putting the game down. LBP met and exceeded expectations. Just because it pains you that you and many people were wrong about lbp's appeal doesn't mean you should keep up he charade. Get over it
