I think the Zelda series is overdue for a good mix'em'up title that changes the dynamic. But I doubt they would be willing to do it considering the success of the formula they have been using for oh so long.

At the very least I think the 1:1 sword play would be very popular and it would be a huge benefit to the Wii overall. It basically would act as a proof of concept and I think could ultimately result in a number of interesting games and possibly a new genre...I know everyone has been anticipating Light Saber duals since E306! Or at least I have =P

Though I like my Wii and enjoy the controller experience, I don't think the technology found in the Wii controller is capable of doing 1:1 response. It is pretty easy to move your arm/hand faster than the Wii controller can update the screen. I think two things are going to be needed for true 1:1 gameplay: First, more processing power in the Wii itself. Though the unit is technically pretty solid, that's a drastic amount of real-time physics to update and they'll have to be updated with a staggering refresh rate to keep up with a rapidly moving controller. The second is the wireless technology in the Wii controller. I don't believe the inherent lag time will allow for true 1:1 even if the Wii hardware can handle the physics. It will probably take a much higher quality accelerometer/gyroscope to have the precision that is going to be needed for mind boggling 1:1 gameplay control in 3D space. I do believe we will see it in the second generation Wii. The controller has proven the merits of it's design and the 1.0 has exceeded even Nintendo's wildest dreams...

Just to be clear I have worked with some of the developement tools out there for the Wiimote, so I am not just talking out of my ass here.  I actually know first hand what the thing is capable of.

So with that in mind, let me say the remote is far far more than sensitive enough to register 1:1 movement.  Subtle movements and large whipping motions are all registered with accuracy.  The only problem thus far has been that nobody has sat down and coded the interface.  Once again to be clear this isn't a simple task, there are a lot of problems in maintaining a natural look and feel for when people do odd things (ie drop/throw their remote).  Up until now most efforts have been simply detecting when one of the accelerometers exceeds a certain speed in a certain direction and triggering an interface event corresponding to that action.  But the Wii-mote is capable of much much more, of that you can be sure.

You would think it is a simple situation of having 3 vectors and tracking the resulting change in position from an arbitrarily defined origin.  But in reality this is only a part of the puzzle. You still have to maintain orientation and that involves properly detecting rotation, tilt, maintaining a sense of up/down (ie gravity),  and more...

But the hardest part is not detecting the movements, it actually comes with melding the movements you are detecting onto the character and having it look, feel, and act fluidly.  As I said there are number of things a player can do that the Wii-mote would probably find unnatural for a body to be able to do, and it needs to have ways of detecting and dealing with these motions such that it doesn't completely break you away from the immersion they are working so hard to create.

So in short, while everyone thinks this is a simple case of math that just needs to be worked out, that is only part of the puzzle.  There is a great deal of math involved in detections, but there is a great deal of ingenuity required in taking what is detected and making it look and feel "just right".

Regarding Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf "heritage"...

"Link" is almost always a different person, with no relation to past Links. The series has, at minimum, 8 different characters "named" Link. Often has a family member present in the game (or mentioned).

Zelda is always a princess, and thus always some relative of past and future Zeldas.

Ganondorf is... the same person. His exposure to the Triforce (and various other occultish items... and several deaths) have granted him relative immortality.

I agree with this, however I think it should be said:

There is no such thing is a linked storyline for every Zelda game.  There are only 5 Zelda games that are in any way connected:

Ocarina of Time

Majoras Mask

--thousands to hundreds of thousands of years pass--

Twilight Princess

--hundreds of thousands of years pass--

Wind Waker

Phantom Hourglass

That's it.  If you try to connect anything else you will only end up looking like an idiot lol.  Every Zelda game simply does not connect.

I have seen the Zelda Retrospective, and Game Trailers does a very good job at connecting all of the games.

Hey you forgot about Minish Cap...

Link discover a green cap that can talk and there's a hint in the story about the timeline, it's around 500 years before Ocarina of Time , it could the very first Zelda.

1. Minish Cap

I agree with the split theory:

Ocarina of Time ( Ganondorf his arrested in the past )
Majora's mask ( Young link travel in an other dimension in search of a friend ( Navy ))
Link's Awakening
The Legend of Zelda ( links return to Hyrule invaded by monsters )
Zelda II

Ocarina of Time ( Ganondorf sealed in the future )
Twilight Princess
?????? ( maybe next Zelda )
Wind Waker
Phantom Hourglass

Put Season and Ages at the end of each one ( not sure about the games going on each time line )

Not sure either about link to the past and four sword
Hyrule has been definitly sealed in Wind Waker so I'm not sure about a link to the past

wait wait wait. The split theory was unbelievably ridiculous (yes I watched it way back then as well).

First of all: They tried to say that all of Hyrule moved north in a freaking year.

Another issue: They claim that the clothes Link wears in TP were the "clothes of the hero." However, TP is placed on the Majora's Mask timeline. Let's think about this: If they were the clothes of Link from Majora's Mask, how the hell were they adult sized?

Another issue: There wasn't a freaking Link left in Hyrule B, nor was there a freaking Master Sword. He took it with him. So where the hell did all those other Links get Master Swords???

I'm sorry, but those are just a few of the many many many holes in the timeline theories. People just need to accept that Zelda is NOT THAT DEEP. They didn't think ahead when making the stories in order to connect them. Zelda is no more connected than Final Fantasy other than the 5 games I mentioned.

The story should be about the events before TWW. Y'know, before the food, and Zoras turned into Ritos, and Kokiri the plant things (firget their name) and PLEASE no more Ganondorf! I'm SICK of him. He appears in like every game. And I'd like to focus more on "sword" fighting. You use items too much and less sword fighting. And after you're done with a dungeon you like never use it again and get another item...

I'm not in favor of a complete overhaul.  I absolutely loved the character art and design in TP.  For some reason, I found it easier to connect with characters in TP than in WW.  Whether that's because of graphics or what, I don't know.  I do acknowledge, though, that a big twist on gameplay would be nice.  Their puzzle concept is genius, but for those of us who've played countless Zelda games, the train of thought required to complete the puzzles has long since been mastered making most of them seem easy.  I'd also like to see more use of ALL the equipment Link aquires in dungeons instead of simply the newest one.  That is, if they decide to keep the equipment system.

Another idea is to maybe focus more on horseback.  Besides traversing the monstrously large Hyrule Field, Epona is virtually unnecessary.  Like you said, more emphasis on character development will be nice.  Even if it was great in TP, there's still room for improvement.

I would like the game to be turn-based with a great story. I would also like to buy weapons and armor... things like that would make Zelda alot better.

Responding to several things at once...

Every Zelda game simply does not connect.

According to the series producers, they have a Master Timeline that connects all the Zelda games. They release the games to tell one chunk of the bigger story.
Another issue: They claim that the clothes Link wears in TP were the "clothes of the hero." However, TP is placed on the Majora's Mask timeline. Let's think about this: If they were the clothes of Link from Majora's Mask, how the hell were they adult sized?

Majora's Mask takes place in Termina, an alternate world. Twilight Princess takes place in Hyrule, the same universe/land as Ocarina of Time.
Another issue: There wasn't a freaking Link left in Hyrule B, nor was there a freaking Master Sword. He took it with him. So where the hell did all those other Links get Master Swords???

Presumably, the Master Sword was left behind in Hyrule B.
