Forums - Sales - Two more records broken this week (By Wii w/ some PS2&DS numbers)

EDIT: See my next post for the two records broken this week ending December 20th, 2008.

The following is data up to the week ending December 13th, 2008.

I'm surprised nobody else mentioned it, but the Wii set itself a new weekly WW record with 1,478,813.  Last year it sold 1,463,690 the week of Christmas.  For further comparison in DS's 3rd holiday season it peaked at 1,475,035.  EDIT: This is no longer a broken record, the data has since been adjusted down to 1,450,207.

The record will all but undoubtedly be pushed even higher in one of the next two weeks.  We shall see if it can eclipse PS2's all-time home-console record of 1,761,665.  DS has passed that bar three times(twice already this year) and holds the overall record with 2,012,422 sold WW in a single week.  It is looking like the DS will push this bar higher as well.  EDIT: The record has indeed been truly broken, for more info see my next post.

The Wii has also overtaken the PS2 in consoles sold in a single year with this week's numbers.  From Jan 6th 2002 to Jan 4th 2003 PS2 sold 21,101,383 units.  From Jan 6th of this year to date the Wii has sold 22,260,953 units, and obviously this number will grow with 3 weeks of data left.  Not surprisingly, it has also already surpassed the DS's equivalent year year in which it sold 21,365,224 units between Jan 1st 2006 and Jan 6th 2007.

The overall record remains in the hands of the DS for now though.  Last year it sold 29,000,434 units between Jan 7th and Jan 5th of this year.  Without a doubt this record will also be furthered, as its YTD total is already 28,255,325.

Nobody mentioned it because we all know the Wii is successful and nobody really notices unless it's a huge landmark, like 2 million units.

wow not bad Wii and DS. Beating PS2 in anything is nothing short than incredible.

The only records that matter are:

1. PS2's weekly record - 1.7 million rounded down

2. PS2's lifetime sales - 123 million and counting (although i think this site is lowballing PS2 considering they've shipped 130 million PS2's)

It probably gets harder to estimate, with all the smaller countries out there...

The Wii will eventually overtake it, anyway. Once it matches it in shipments, it'll be safe to say it probably did the job.

Rather than create another thread with the same title, I figured I'd just update this one with the two new records broken this week.

First, Wii broke the all-time weekly record for sales in a single region with 1,000,930 units sold in the Americas this week. The previous record was held by PS2 with 960,847 units sold in the Americas the week of Christmas '02.

Second, Wii will break the home-console weekly record held by PS2 of 1,761,665 units, which also occured the week of Christmas '02, once Japan numbers are in. I will edit this post with the final numbers once they come in. Should Japan actually come up short, I will post a youtube video of myself eating crow. :P

Additionally, the DS should break its own all-time weekly record of 2,012,422 units, which it set the week of Christmas '07.  It is already at 1,929,713 without Japan.

Wii has obviously extended its record of WW sales of a home-console in a single year, and DS has done the same for the all-time record.

UPDATE: No crow needed!

The Wii has moved into the #1 position for home consoles sold in a week WW. The new record is 1,838,350.
The DS has also pushed the all-time record even higher with 2,190,483 units sold.
