On the other hand the 360 is already there, and there is no real increase in sales over last year

Look at your numbers flame. The 360 sold less this year in sep (350 '07 vs 528 '08) and virtually the same in oct (366 '07 vs 371 '08) and then only slightly better in November (770 '07 vs 836 '08)

In fact september through November sales are actually down around 100k 07 vs 08, this despite a 100 dollar price drop.

PS3 sales are about even from sep through nov with last year. Up about 100k in Sep and Oct vs down around 80k in Nov. Basically the PS3 is up 100k in sales over the last 3 months vs 07 while the 360 is down 100k in sales over the last three months vs 07. Do the math yourself, despite the big price drop the 360 is doing no better then last year (except maybe in the perception game).

As to the Wii, there has been a nearly 2 to 1 increase in sales with no price drop. Up 200k in sept, 300k in oct and 1 million in November to go from about 2 million in 3 months to about 3.5 million.

Nintendo is the ONLY console maker showing any significant growth (and without a price cut at that). Sony is more or less treading water (also without a price cut) posting only a modest gain. The 360, the only console WITH a price cut is actually thus far doing worse in 08 then it did in 07. This might change with december sales, but as it stands, the 360 is the only console behind last years numbers over the last few months.

For all of 08 thus far in NA (the 360s strong market) the PS3 has doubled last years sales, the Wii has doubled last years MUCH higher sales and the 360 has sales that are almost identical to last year.  From Jan through Nov the 360 is up a few percentage points at best.  Feel free to cherry pick one month out of 12, but the story is far from the "360 dominates!" one you want to tell.

PSN ID: ChosenOne feel free to add me

@Soriku - Glad someone see's this to, if theres one thing that the 360 has that the PS3 and Wii lacks its strong "Fan" and "C" support. but yeah i agree what you said about the Wii and PS3 thing to, now im sad. ;_;

@~Flame - Whhhaaaaat?

google recession many people are going through it, the sales have increased for the 360 in america november actually

from the NPD:

360: 770K / 836K = +66K
WII: 981K / 2.04M = +1.06M
NDS: 1.53M / 1.57M = +40K

funny how you try to nitpick sure the Oct sales were dead even but they made that up all in november...

Sales of games is a problem, 20 PS3 million sellers, 31 Wii ms, 53 360 ms.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Very well written article. It's too bad so many people can't take off their rose-colored glasses to see just how far up the creek Sony put themselves.

I thought it was the Wii who the press hated? All jumping ship to PS3, it seems.

Believe it or not, Sony is a much easier target...and for the record, I'd assume that if this article was basing the mediocre library comment directly of metacrtitic ratings for 90 plus games on the PS3 verses the 360, then I can see how one would draw that conclusion. It does make reference to the cheaper 360 in that same statement, and the only quantifiable judges that we have of popularity are metacritic and sales, and neither one of those favors the PS3 in the least, overall.

So yes, this article could actually be properly sourced as an opinion piece.

However, it is written by a n00b, who has very little to no idea what he's talking about.

I think it's hilarious, however. Take your medicine Sony. The only ones I feel for are those poor Sony fans who have to weather this storm brought on by Sony's refusal to bend to the changing market.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

wtf?

Blu-Ray is only noticeable on TV's 50 inches or above? What a load of bull

I agree.  But alot of people don't care about the difference.

Also I think the library is better than mediocre.

But the rest rings true.

There's seemingly nothing Sony can do to stop the downward spiral. Soon, I think Sony will stop advertising PS3 and just try to cut its losses. Maybe there will be a PS4 and maybe not (I hope there will be) but at this point, Sony has no viable path toward making the PS3 profitable.

*sigh* stealth trolling, you didnt say "In my Opinion" there screwed yes, but that doesnt mean things can get better which they can so please stop the negative energy. :/

Sony in all truth, has one BIG f***ing problem - one that just can't be solved easily.

They are competing against the 360 - and MS. MS is reaping insane amounts of money from the *rest* of the company, and can throw as much at the 360 as they like. In other words, they can cut the price whenever - and however they really feel like it.

Sony can't. As a company, Sony is effectively struggling at the moment - and as a result they are walking a "fine line" with the PS3.

The more units they sell - the more they lose. Drop the price - and sell even more units, at even a bigger "per-unit" loss.

They really have two options:
1/ INCREASE the price of the PS3 (yeah, that will go down well...)

2/ Suck it in, and focus their efforts on reducing the price of the PS3.

...

Basically, they can't compete with MS - not like this.

They *really* need to launch that "networked-only" PS3 (no BluRay, no drive, ...) and price it such that they *make a profit* on each unit - yet make it affordable enough that it reinvigorates overall sales.

They can't just "pull out" - doing that now, would be the end of the Playstation brand forever (increasing price to "cost" would be a better option).

Unfortunately, sales of the PS2 are also down a lot (and will collapse next year IMO) - and sales of the PSP will also start to tail off (most of the recent boost has come from the release of the PSP 2000 & PSP 3000.. .they can't keep doing this forever!).

Unless they are SURE of lots of software sales, they simply have to turn a greater profit from each PS3 sold. Bundles are a good place to start...
