I'm not sure if you're trolling or being serious but any company can have rough times. The best of the best have (Sony and Nintendo both) have been the best at one time or another but both had/have their hard times as well. Obviously, Nintendo recovered, I see Sony doing the same if they just remain profitable this gen and come back fightin, PS2 style, with the PS4. One can only hope though. Sony, I hope you're listenin' - get your ass in gear...NOW!

Actually, Nintendo hasn't, at least in the same way. You are no doubt referring to the GameCube which was not a great commercial success by market share but was, none the less profitable. They also were enjoying some success in the handheld market as you may recall/

Apparently, so I've read, Nintendo has only lost money one quarter in the entire life of the company and that was an exchange rate issue beyond their control.

That statement becomes even more astounding when you consider that the company has been around for 118+ years or so.

Great for Sony. So...

How much did they lose off each of those sales?

VGChartz Hardware data for the period 08th Nov 2008 to 29th Nov 2008:

At 400$/€. How bad for Sony... =)
it probably will sell 2 MILLIONS or even more in December, again at 400$/€.
Selling 3 mln. consoles in 2 months probably is very BAD. PS3 is dying. =)))

Awesome. So at a LOSS of between $50US- $100US per unit - they will only lose $50-$100m [1] US in Nov, and double that in December on PS3 hardware. Way to go Sony ;)

Lets hope they sell enough software, PS2 & PSP hardware to make up the overall loss [2]...

...

I can only imagine how "well" they would have done with a $100US price cut [3]...

1. Pales in comparison to a $1billion dollar RRoD loss that doesn't appear in most MS financial statements, huh?  Go ahead and divide that up per console sold.  But hey, they get lots of extra charges from fans in the way of Live payments, proprietary hard drives, wifi, etc.

2. Too bad MS couldn't sustain another console.

3.  You are conflating units sold with profit per unit.  Sony still wants to sell hardware even at a bit of a loss to increase user base.   They made their choice as to how much loss per unit was tolerable this season.

Now, the damn thing *is* too expensive, we all agree.  Still, though, your points left something to be desired.

there is no evidence anywhere of a production value on the PS3 unit currently.  The most accurate information indicates, currency value remaining constant from year to year, a breakeven on the console would occur second half of FY08 (oct 08-mar 09.)  Based on that information it is highly unlikely the loss per unit is anywhere near what you stated.  Between all 3 hardware units sales figures, the hardware portion of the gaming division is currently profitable.  If they can sell 1 1st party software title per new buyer, loss offset. (and who buys hardware without a game, except for a wii which has the most fun bundled with it).

Why does this say other wise somethings wrong :p

This graph states exactly that the PS3 sold 1 Million in November. FAIL :P

@Topic

Even if PS3 sold only 200k during November Crazzy would find a way to spin it. He always does. Just accept it, the PS3 is doing really bad and the main reason is neither recession nor price.

I wish people could be more accurate when then talk about the Ps3 and its price. Something like this

"PS3 is not selling as much as the 360 because at $400 dollars it is not the best Value proposition"

Its not that the PS3 couldn't sell more at $400, its the fact that to some people its not the best VALUE. Apple is selling more iPhones/Month that sony is selling PS3's, because people can see the iPhone have better VALUE.

When Sony does drop its price, the arguement will still be there, Does the XBOX360(which will also be at a lower price) offer me better value?

People also have to remember that the price of standalone BLU-RAY players will drop faster than the PS3 pricing, making the XBOX360 perceived value higher as time goes on

o rly ?

dammmm....i didn't know that.........how many iphones are out there btw ????????????

 He's wrong.

Iphones shipped from April 2007 through March 2008 = ~ 5.4M (http://www.systemshootouts.org/iphone_sales.html)

Ps3s sold from April 2007 through March 2008: ~ 8.8M (http://vgchartz.com/hwtable.php?cons%5B%5D=PS3®%5B%5D=Total&start=39180&end=39544)

... Want a better comparison?

Macs shipped from April 2007 through March 2008: ~ 8.5M  (http://www.systemshootouts.org/mac_sales.html)

Ps3 sold is pretty much equal to Mac for that period, but far above Iphone (nowhere near Ipod though, which is pretty much DS+PsP combined).

HAHAHA.......as i thought..it was so damn hard 4 me to believe..thanks for posting it bro

*Sigh*

i was going to write a big rebuttal, but im not an apple fanboy. You just didnt remember that the iPhone 3G launched in JULY and sold to 70 countrys rather than just 1.!!!!!!!!!!!!

anyway

Heres a quote Tuesday, October 21, 2008 which still gives them 3 more months to sell and they had already sold more than the PS3 will sell all this YEAR

Apple sold 6,892,000 iPhones during the quarter and earned about $806M from these and related products over the quarter; this is more than all previous quarters combined.

Apple has already surpassed its goal of selling 10 million iPhones in calendar 2008.

BAM!

Heres some more

http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/12/04/apples_smartphone_share_closer_to_13_still_ahead_of_microsoft.html

Apples sold 4.72Million iphones in the third quarter of this year!!!(shipped 7 Million)

that is ww huh...

so the wii only sold 100% more in the US alone than the PS3 did ww... Huh better than I thought.

Hi, yes, we know the Wii is winning worldwide by huge margins.  Oddly enough, the 360 and the PS3 are still getting the best games, despite this huge margin of victory.  Get off the pedestal, you are providing nothing new to the conversation.

Really? You should have write best shooter games. It seems you didn't heard about DQX...

Hmm, I am not playing any shooters right now, with the exception of the very cool Left4Dead on occasion.  Otherwise I am keping busy with Prince of Persia, LittleBigPlanet, Valkyria Chronicles, and Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix.  OMG, not shooters.

Sure Sure, the Wii get DQ which from what I undersand is very popular among the Japanese.

Sure only japanese like DQ

Learn to read.  i never said only the Japanese like the game.  Americans like DQ, but it is not popular here.  For example ... I asked 3 gamers, 2 who own all 3 consoles, if they were psyched about DQ being a Wii exclusive.  Their response "What is Dragon Quest?"

This is totally BS. I did the same and everybody knows DQ. In fact DQ > FF. Now if you want to speak about which console owns the best games, this is a matter of tastes. I prefer by far Wii games to PS360 games and looking at the sales I think that i'm not the only one...

The Wii is selling to kids and newbies. Congratulations to them for putting out a very bad console and suckering millions into buying one.......including me.

Microsoft has done an outstanding job advertising for the 360 and the price cut has helped out tremendously. Before the price cut, the PS3 was outselling it WW.

The Ps3 is not selling like it should due to the lack of funds most people have. It is not really a product parents are going to buy for there kids due to its price point. That is why the Wii and the 360 are selling so much right now. That is perfectly fine though. The Ps3 sales will remain steady and pick up again after the holidays. Look for tax return time to be good period for the PS3. Once they manage to drop the price, it will again outsell the 360. People just aren't going to buy there 7 year old a $400 gaming console. They don't need a BD player either. The PS3 is geared more toward adults right now. So by doing so Sony has lost out on a very large market. They can only get that back when they drop the price.

At the end of the day the PS3 is the best console and mine is in use everyday for hours on end. It sits right next to my Wii that is ever collecting dust. Occasionally my son will give Wii sports a try only to get board and want to play the PS3. I do have other games for it but he doesn't care for them. I am glad that Sony did what it did this gen for the most part. I think they should have left the PS2 BC in all consoles though. If my 60GB ever dies, I will not buy another PS3 unless it supports PS2 games as well.
