Forums - Sony - So Home is just about what I expected...

Home is a big pile of crap. I was really really really hoping sony wouldn't screw something up for a change.

Too many options?  Pfft.  Not enough.  Theres even less customization than in xbox's avatars.  They just look more realistic.

Even in the early morning the bowling alleys stuff is all occupied.  I doubt i'd spend more than a couple hours total in here unless they somehow made these minigames really fun.  Even so, they did really drop the ball there.

I have to load home.  Huge mistake.  I, and I assume most people, aren't going to sit and load home every time we want to play something unless we have things scheduled with friends.  Then again, home still isn't very necessary.  We still don't need to use it to play together unless we want to feel like super nerdy high school kids hanging out at someones home doing absolutely nothing.  Wait, thats not true.  We can do crappy little 2 step dances.  Yay! Fun!

I really was hoping this would be cool.  Just one more thing sony couldn't have screwed up more if they tried.  There are a few more things I don't like about home, but I don't even care enough to continue posting about it.  It sucks hard, and I assume most people are going to agree unless they're hardcore sony fanboys.

What they should do in the full release is add servers. That should help ease the strain, something like WoW.

I haven't downloaded Home yet. I'm afraid to. I'll wait a few days until they've ironed everything out.

Nah. I'll go do it now.

Sony is a little short on cash and servers for their free service cost money.

Something tells me they want as many servers as they need to make people happy. They charge $0.49 minimum for anything you can get in Home. Your apartment looks like boring crap. I think the only thing you can move is the lamp (only hung around for a few seconds).

also, there is advertising space everywhere. Right now it is all for sony products, but they will probably make a killing once they get this up and running.

Oh, one other note about my HOME experience. I didn't have the downloading problems a lot of people were having. I got into the threater and it took like 2min for the trailer to download. I watched the whole thing, and then I noticed someone saying it took them 20 minutes for the movie to start.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

Home is about what I expected it to be at this point.  It's not great, but I will spend some time in it.  Some of the posters on this thread seem to view it as a game that is designed to entertain you.  Home seems to be a place that is designed for you to meet people and to make your own entertainment.  The success on this will rise and fall on the game spaces.  Once we see how the developers plan to implement them then we will know if there is any value in Home.

A couple of my thoughts based upon the op:

  • I did not notice any framerate issues in any of the spaces.  Can you detail your actions in your apartment so I can recreate on my system?
  • The downloading system is perfect in my opionion.  The initial Home download is 77 megs and most spaces are about 30 megs.  I like the fact that Sony allows you to choose what you want to download.  There are some spaces that I will never go to, so why would I download them.  Also, all spaces can be queued and downloaded in the background which is a plus.  I have a dsl connection and I was happy with the speed of the downloads.
  • The avatars do look like douches.  I would say the same thing about the 360 avatars.  The Wii nailed the avatar creation system.
  • You should be able to play pool, the arcade games, bowl, etc without waiting.
  • Graphically speaking, I think Home looks great.
  • Moving between the sections if very easy.  You can walk to any of the areas via the plaza or you can warp directly there via the menu.  Each section takes about 10 seconds to load which is not a problem in my opinion.

The first thing you should do in Home is start the download of the Mall, Bowling Alley, Theater, and Plaza.  While they download, you should create your avatar.  Your first download should be completed by the time you have an acceptible version of you.  Now you can go and explore.

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

Yeah I had an absolute blast with home ^^ The mini-games didn't bother me too much, I wasn't really interested in playing them :P I signed into home to go chat with people, and man it's friggin awesome for it!

From 0 to KICKASS in .stupid seconds.

I forgot to mention, the saucer pop minigame in the central plaza is pretty good and usually it is available. Stand by the fountain in the middle of the plaza and you will be able to play it. Pool and bowling are about what you would expect. I met a lot of people playing pool it was pretty fun.

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

sounds like the scribbles of someone trying to make home look bad

It sounded like most of the professional reviews I read yesterday.  It's borning and pointless unless you like throwing money at Sony.  The best part, Bowling, would be "laughed off of Wii Ware".

Lol nice read,cool thread twes.

Yes -- it's a year late already and it is still in beta.

Microsoft's point about Home being too late is somewhat correct. Everyone who plays it will says, "hey, i've already done social networking before. And it isn't this clunky.."

I wonder if by the time I play my PS3 next (3 weeks from now), will HOME either be a thriving community or rubble?

As much as I hate the concept of HOME, I actually want the former, so I can at least try it out and judge for myself.

But like I've said many times before, one of the big issues with throwing your support behind home (for the PS3 fanboys, and by support I mean saying HOME will be the next big thing), is that it offers 10% of what's available on Second Life when it (Home) begins, but possibly brings 100% more problems.

I guess I'll find out in 3 weeks.

what am more disappointed about is that there is no streaming, like twesterm said when you go to the theater it downloads full, it does not streams and that is bad, there is nothing to do in the plaza there is no reason to be there. Only the mall and the bowling ally are useful and the mall is empty, i though that all that was because it was a beta but now is live and is still a crap.

Another thing that annoys me is that you appear at location instead of walking in, you are at the door then disappear and appear inside. The thing is for something that it has been for so LONG in development i was specting it to be perfect. Up until now home is a waste of time, I went to the uncharted space hoping that there would be sully and nathan but is empty and small, no reason to be there at all.

Bowling is also boring, and arcade downloads when you want to play them, echochrome took so long to download that i couldnt wait. For those hoping that home would cause a revolution, this has been the worse of starts, i just hope it gets better very fats.
