Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo: Why the Wii Won't Get a Price Cut

To put it simply, so that everyone understands.

"hahaha It's selling like Hotcakes, we don't need a price cut"

"We will probably raise the price next quarter"

Best gif ever. lol.

@Greenmedic: New colours and pricecut aren't going to happen even in Japan, before the worldwide demand can be supplied. Nintendo would need to hurry, if Wii would be outsold by the competition in the japanese market, but since it's not happening, the current situation fits Nintendo just fine (for now).

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

The way the Wii is selling, I do not see why it would need a price cut. I never expected the Wii to sell anywhere close to what it has done, but it's great for Nintendo.

I always wonder how well the next iteration of the system (Wii 2?)will do. I can't see it being anywhere near as successful as I don't see casual gamers having a need to pick up the next system. Perhaps some new features will be able to sell the next system to the same crowd.

They don't 'need' to pick up the latest evolution of the iPod, either--see where that wound up?

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

@Greenmedic: Umm... That's apparently not the situation in Europe. We have had discounts etc. Today, for example, i visited a hypermarket that was just opened to my neighbourhood and they had Wii+Wii Fit bundles for 349€ (if i read the price right), while the MSRP for each are 269€ and 109€.

Anyway, my point was that it's for the retailer to choose whether they discount some or make better profit per unit. If they make better profit, they have the product in their ads and if they discount, it propably is in their ads too. Besides, the more profit you are able to make per unit, the more retailers are interested in taking the product into their store shelves.

Well the previous ipod and the ipod touch have enough differences and new features that may have swayed people to purchase it.  That's why I said made the new features comment.

until i see a price cut, nintendo won't see my money

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

You might have to wait a loooooooooong time for that.

At its current price point the Wii is the fast selling console of all time, besting both the PS2 and even the DS (which is also above the PS2). The fastest-selling console of all time, and that's without even meeting demand. There is no reason to lower the price. Nintendo is building (and selling) systems faster than their competitors. They have nothing to worry about. If at some point they meet demand and sales slow down, they'll introduce some amazing new games, some new colors, and maybe some bundles. Then if demand and sales slow down again, we'll get a price cut. But until then, people are still paying $300-$400 for Wiis on eBay and in forced bundles at some stores.

Well, of course their new system will have new features--it wouldn't be a new system without them XD

Nintendo could raise the price of the Wii to $299 and it would still fly off the shelves. They have done a masterful job of marketing and supply manipulation to create high demand for over 2 years now.  Why cut the price when you're making money hand over fist at the current price?
