But due to the fact that it has a super high price point that means it'll continue to sell for longer when that ps3 price comes down. Also the good 3rd party support due to ps2 domination, despite the low numbers for ps3, adds in another longevity factor. And finally that this gen will most likely last a year or two longer than previous gens because the wii is dominating and has no reason to rush to the next gen, and ps360 are so expensive that next gen will have to wait longer to be released not only so that the technology/graphics is significantly better than ps360 so as to make a real difference but they need to release not super overpriced systems next time, which means there is no reason to start next gen till their current gen systems get down to probably $180 or less, then they could reasonably release a ~350 dollar new system. so considering all that ps3 should attain SNES like numbers, maybe slightly more depending on how tough the battle with 360 is. but i see the total hd sales for this gen reaching about 100 million, with at most a 45/55 split either way between 360 and ps3. |
I'm expecting PS3 selling less than 40M in its lifetime. Well, i'm not here arguing about peoples expectations.
Anyway, the support that PS3 gets bacause of PS2 is something you shouldn't count on. Publishers go where the money's at, which is Wii, if not yet, will soon be. So it should be the Wii, that will get the PS2:s good support (of course, i'm not expecting Wii grabbing the support in a similar fashion that PS2 did).
@Kulle: Very possible. Which forum are you talking about?

well i was just saying that so far the ps3 has gotten support because of the ps2 and all those companies didn't know when they start a lot of these games that the ps3 was gonna not sell very well. i sure hope the 3rd party support switches heavily over to the wii though!
and i had previously thought the ps3 would sell 35-40 million, but at the rate its going and given that this gen should be longer than previous ones from my reasoning above, i think its gotta sell at least 45. and i think it will eventually pass 360 so it'll probably sell 50-55, while 360 sells 45-50 mil.
end of '08 predictions: wii - 43 million, 360 - 25 million, ps3 - 20 million
Games I've beat recently: Super Mario Galaxy, Knights of the Old Republic, Shadow of the Collossus
Proud owner of wii, gamecube, xbox, ps2, dreamcast, n64, snes, genesis, 3DO, nes, atari, intellivision, unisonic tournament 2000, and gameboy

Gotten support, yeah it has. I was thinkig more about the future support. PS3 has had legs lately, but i donn't think it will have them for long. And 360 is peaking this year ,ost likely.

Actually the "for kids" thing started in general during the Gamecube. The smaller capasity media didn't kill 3rd party support. M$ paid for GC exlusives going to Xbox, PS2 was so dominant that developing for any other platform was financially pretty stupid. GC was easy and cheap platform to develope for and it had pretty good 3rd party support right out of the gate, the support was gone due to it selling so badly. And lastly, there was demand for GC, atleast pre-launch, but it went down the drain with the 3rd party support. |
Indeed the GC was the easier to develop to but the small media surely gimped down a lot of titles, like doing midi sound , compressed textures and low res movies. Actually using 8cm mini-DVDs as media format is more expensive than standard 12 cm DVDs. That's because 12cm is far more produced and therefore cheaper. For instance you see that many third party titles reached both XB and PS2 but not the GC, which missed many many good games.

The medium played its part and one reason why a lot of games missed GC, was because, unlike Xbox, GC sold in 3 regions, meaning that the western publishers weren't that interested in GC, as opposed to Xbox, since it was even more weaker in their target markets than it was WW. And, a lot of multiplatform games was seen on Xbox because M$ paid them for it.
I doubt that the medium was that much of an issue, since GC could use compressed data in a lot different way that PS2 could (notice that PS2:s medium was only about 3 times as large as GC:s was), which would save space. RE4 used 2 discs and it was graphically pretty intensive and had quite a lot of content - more than most of the 6th generation games (which i'm betting that most of them would have easilly fit into single GC disc).
