Forums - Nintendo - Will the Wii ever match the 64 in terms of awesome platformers?

Well no, I think. Rare's gone, and platformers aren't a popular genre of gaming anymore. I also don't think Zelda games qualify as platformers, but that's another discussion entirely.
And like HappySqurriel said, no platforming game that comes out now is ever gonna have the impact the N64 classics had. Still, Wii already has some excellent platformers. :)

 This ^^

I dont really think MS and rare go together... Rare and Nintendo seemed to work better together.

The problem isn't MS and Rare's chemistry , the problem is Rare.

They haven't put out much and their games have been mediocre.

Their N64 stuff is extremely over rated in my opinion, but they were cutting edge for the time.

Some key staff left Rare after the MS take over, including the top bosses.

I'm aware. Apprently they need another new staff.

Or maybe get other studios to create games with Rare IPs.

well I´ve owened practically every nintendo console (since 1990, and grew up on with original mario and sequels), and I have to say the the awesomesauce that are galaxy 1&2 and dkcr make feel wii has already matched and supassed n64 (thought it doesn´t get close to snes and nes yet).

(rare games, don´t hold up as well as I thought. mario 64 is a different story though)

I mean just the galaxy games are better than any platformer on 64 (and yes, mario 64 is one of my favorite games ever)

It already has as Nintendo 64 never had a decent platformer.

Blasphemy! Platformers doesn't have to be 2D to be decent.

Yes they have.

Above: still the best game of the year.

Actually, imo, even the GC had better platformers than the Wii (Mario Sunshine, Star Fox Adventures, Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, Prince of Persia).

I love DKCR but I've never been a fan of Super Mario Galaxy. I so wanted to like that game. I completed it twice but it felt bland both times. Perhaps I should give Galaxy 2 a shot.

What?! But Super Mario Sunshine was terrible. And Jungle Beat was a weird spinoff while DKCR is a full blown Donkey Kong Country, and the Wii has a Prince of Persia. And Dinosaur Planet dissapointed a lot of people when they forced Rare to slap Star Fox on it.

The GC isn't even in the same league as the Wii when it comes to platformers.

you should. And when you say completed you mean 100% or you just got 60 stars and beat it?

Also galaxy 2 is much better than galaxy 1. and the reward for getting all 240 stars is awesome. Eventhough some of the green stars are dull some are really clever. I would definetely advice you to try it.

edit: and yes Sunshine was great (so underrated)

Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 are both way better in every ways compared to Sunshine.

Starfox adventures is not even a platformer. It has automatic jumps. It's a Zelda clone who failed to live up the expectations. It's way under Zelda TWW and Twilight Princess.
