Forums - Gaming - Why is everyone raving about Dead Space?

So I've heard many statements of amazingness about Dead Space on this site. Many reviews saying this game is the real deal. Plus I love survival horror games...so it was a given I will get this game.

I must say I really don't understand what all the hype is about. Especially after playing the latest Silent Hill few weeks ago..this game doesnt measure up as survival anything.

First of all the story suck major ass. Its like they read the summary of a few sci fi movies and picked out the most cliched aspects for the story. The idea of a plot twist for this game is your general saying..."OMG. This is not a virus...its a new alien lifeform". A 14 year old that is in to sci fi comics wrote this games story...

Secondly its not scary at all. The game thinks that startling the gamer over and over with repetitive monsters is scary. Sure 3,4...7 times... but afterwards it becomes routine. Especially when you know that your guns are stocked with ammo and you got ample of health. You are alone in space...yet there is no sense of isolation what so ever since the commander keeps bugging you for quests every 30 seconds and every room has a weapons upgrade machines and save points and tonnes of audio/video logs. Go figure...

The gameplay is pretty good for a bit but it doesn't hold up at all later in the game. I have not beaten it yet and am completely bored. Mosters need variety...same monsters over and over...with different pants mind you. Why is there no 180 turnaround button. For christs sake...mosters will come from all sides without warning yet I have to steer myself like a tank when I want to turn around. Slow mo...gravity gun...there should be videogame police that stop games from ripping off other games like this.

The only things that I can think of that are fooling the reviewers in to giving this game AAA reviews is that the visuals and audio are trully superb. Also the slicing/dismemberment is a cool new gameplay gimmick that carries the gameplay but this game is a one trick pony in my eyes.

Can someone that has been gaming for more than a generation or 2 explain to me why they like this game?

Because it is Resident Evil 4 in space?
plus your short changing the story, it actually is fairly good, and the voice acting is also good

I HAVE A DOUBLE DRAGON CAB IN MY KITCHEN!!!!!!

NOW A PUNISHER CAB!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also, when you say you didn't find the game scary I disagree. I thought it had great atmosphere, immersion, gameplay, and production values. The story was also relatively fair.

It's flaws were bad bosses and repetitive enemies, but the pros vastly outweigh them.

As for the dismembering being a gimmick, so was the Zero-grav rooms, but they were awesome, and truly only possible in this gen. Excellence. Gimmicks are fun and popular for a reason.

9/10 easy. Scary as shit, and better than the last Silent Hill.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

Because RE$ is a great concept. I love the game, it does most things well. Gameplay and presentation are top notch.

@KylieDog

I think that people that love survival horror game of the old (and new with RE4) will share our opinion. Thats exactly how I feel about this game.

@ZenfoldorVGI
I don't doubt that it had a much larger budget than Silent Hill. And that the developers had some nice gameplay ideas tht they based their game around. But as a complete package...so I'd have to politely disagree.

Siren FTW!

Hackers are poor nerds who don't wash.

Because it's RE4 + DOOM3. RE4 in itself wasn't anything scary, but it had really good mechanics while DOOM3 made a lot of people fear the dark. Both games weaknesses apply to this title too, obviously. As to the 180 degree turn button. I don't turn that quickly IRL, much less if I had a heavy suit stuck on me as well. Bosses are lackluster, except for the last boss. He is easy but the fight itself feels very epic. The story is also better than RE4 and DOOM3's. I thouroughly enjoyed this title.

I concur with this. Also, I enjoyed the "repetitive" scare tactics. It makes sense that a ship would have a thorough ventilation system, and that the necromorphs traverse the ship in the vents...well, you cannot escape them. You know that they could burst out of a vent at any moment, but you do not know when.

Doom 3 was the most pathetic attempt to scare the player I ever witnessed:

- 1)you enter a room
- 2)you walk up until a specific point
- 3)you hear enemies spawning
- 4)you know they spawned behind you, so you do a 180-turn and kill them
- 5)you enter the next room and repeat 1)-5)

RE4 wasn't scary too. So what? I don't like RE1-3, but for me RE4 is great. No story? Who cares? Did Gears of War have one? I like the game. Great atmosphere and fresh gameplay. If someone like shooters it will love it.
