Forums - Gaming - If Xbox could run Doom3 & HL2 is it impossible Wii could run 360/PS3 games?

These games came out on the Xbox, but I was always of the opinion that they were the bastardized versions.

Sure, we could get a bastardized version of Gears of War on Wii, but the textures would be muddy, the polygon count would have to be reduced, and you'd have to dump the dolby digital audio. But it would essentally be the same game.

I just got done reading an editorial about the wii specs on http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/2007/07/24/revolutionary-respectable-specs/ so I think wii is capable of some form of these games, just not the exact same experience.

BTW, I'd totally buy the wii version of Gears of War. RE4 works so well with the 3rd person perspective, I'd love to see it work with gears.

Witty signature here...

Wii: 14 million by January  I sold myself short

360: 13 million by January I sold microsoft short, but not as bad as Nintendo.

PS3: 6 million by January. If it approaches 8 mil i'll eat crow  Mnn Crow is yummy.

With these results, I've determined that I suck at long term predictions, and will not long term predict anything ever again. Thus spaketh Crono.

HL2 and D3 are poor graphically in XBOX.

Wii never play games at same graphics level of 360/PS3 and the Nintendo never wanted this.

I never said it could display the games at the same settings as 360/PS3, a game can play the same without looking the same.

Doom3, in particular, had redone maps (smaller coridors, simplier everything) and was very minimized to run acceptably on the original Xbox.  The original Xbox did have a few GPU advantages over the Wii -- ultimately, the Wii doesn't have the hardware shader technology that the Xbox did and it's basically just a gamecube GPU at a faster clock rate.  So some functionality is missing vs the original Xbox.  However, it should be capable of doing most things better than the Xbox.

In the same vein, yes, almost all 360 and PS3 games *could* be ported to the Wii.  However, devs would have to make changes -- textures could be imported at 1/4th or 1/8th their original size, the game engine may have to be simplified, models would have to be simpified, AI and physics may have to be simplified, etc.  It would be a daunting task for some games, but it would be a reasonable thing to do if you planned to do it from the beginning of development (you could generate many versions of models, textures, maps etc).

Honestly, it depends on how a game was designed ...

Many of the PS3 and XBox 360 PC ports may be possible because the content was designed with its minimum requirements being a pretty modest laptop.

A game which was designed with the Wii as its minimum requirements (with enhancements to the PS3/XBox 360 version) would obviously be possible.

The problem will (always) be with games that were designed exclusively for the PS3 or XBox 360 (or were designed only with those systems in mind).

88 megs of RAM? Developers are complaining about only having 256 on the PS3 and the 360...

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

I'm sure I heard that it had access to more, quicker memory and had double the number of pipelines, I could be wrong though.

I realise that there would have to be many compromises but I honestly wouldn't care if it meant getting games like RE5. In fact, sticking to that game, I don't think it would be an easy choice between which version was superior if the Wii version controlled like RE4.

Early 360 games can become I dentical on the wii, it is possible, but they will run slow the games Im talking about are the 1st couple of 360 games that came out in 05, now its a completely different situation.

But then the Xbox's 64 Mbs looks tiny in comparison with the PC's recommended 512 for D3 & HL2.

What you seem to have missed is that yes, these games made it to the Xbox, but they were very much watered down. Half-Life 2 looks like crap when you compare it to the PC version.

Yet the textures on the PS3 and 360 are 4 times larger for 720P if they are taking advantage of the full resolutions. The Wii isn't an HD machine so it doesn't need as much RAM as the 360 or PS3 since games only have to 480P or gul 480i.
