Forums - Sales Discussion - So how exactly is the PS3 going to outsell the Xbox 360?

If Sony is capable of winning this holiday season, then the chances that the PS3 will outsell the 360 will be favorable. The PS3 has done noticeably well the first half of this year. However, the 360 holiday lineup is no pushover and the economy is stark. If the 360 wins, then Sony has to vie for long term.

Unless Sony files for bankruptcy, there is very little doubt that the PS3 will be offered for 10 years. If the PS3 sticks around longer than the 360, then the feat is possible. Whether or not it matters by then is a different story.

The PS3 still has quite a few potentially huge, announced exclusive games that have not been released. Who knows if this is also the case with the 360. Speculated titles for the 360 might just end up appearing on the next generation xbox. At least Sony is currently providing the PS3 enough drive to sell decently into next generation.

If the PS4 continues using cell, Sony can offer the PS3 for cheap while pushing the PS4. All Sony needs to do is upgrade the specs of the PS3 and increase blu-ray drive speed for the PS4.

The 360 is already at a low price and is still selling modestly unlike the PS2. If this trend continues, it is difficult to say if Microsoft would be willing to keep the 360 around once the next wave of consoles hits shelves.

there is a difference between a dead console, and a console that's not selling anymore.

sure, the 360/ps3 combo will keep getting games but...the 360 already has overwhelming third party support, the 360 already has it's heavy hitters out (halo, fable, GTA, madden), the 360 is already very cheap.

so if sales are low now what is MS bringing to the 360 next year that convince someone they ought to buy a 360 when they are not convience now?

Mind using the same logic for the Playstation 3? It is unlikely to pick up any more major 3rd party support, and by the time it drops it's price, the Wii/X360 will have sold tens of millions more consoles, drying up the potential base that demands a $200-300 PS3 by a decent margin.

For every big Playstation 3 title coming out in 09, I am sure any X360 fan can name a similar-selling title. Sony fans used the same deadpan logic for 2008 releases - That games such as GTAIV, MGS4, and Resistance 2 were going to bludegon whatever the X360 had in '08 since MS threw everything they had into the 07 catalogue. And we know how 08 has shaped up.

i'd love too.

the ps3 is not going to sell more via software.  the ps3 has sold more than the 360 this year in every region except America and even there it was very close.  BUT, the ps3 is not very affordable right now but will be in the furture.  it doesn't matter that you view the 360/ps3 as perfectly interchangeable because they are not...everyone, yourself and myself included, have their bias to which console they want.

edit: oh, and as far as the wii goes...let's talk again once it's readily availible in the Americas.

1. Xbox will sooner or later come out with the next system in 2-3 years (if XBox 360 lifecycle is 5 years) and Xbox 360 sales will slow down if the new system does come out

2. PS3 will still be in the market (at a cheap price too later) and still make games for the console just like the PS2 did. PS2 is 8 years and soon to be 9 in the market

3. Sales will change in the future. You guys are all worried about the here and now and what to expect to see within 1-2 years. You need to see expect what happens 5 years from now.

10 year lifecycle baby!~ If you can't beat them now. Live it out till they die.... err discontinued

Cuz 360 is going to stop selling really soon.

Simple...Its not.

The cost difference will continue.
This year least costly 360 will be $200, PS3 $400
Next year least costly 360 will be $150, PS3 $300 (maybe)
2010 least costly 360 will be $99, PS3 $200 (maybe)

Blu-Ray will advantage will decline as the price of stand alone players continue to drop.

3rd party games will not be an advantage for PS3 the remainder of this generation.
1st party games will be a wash between the consoles.

As for this year. The PS3 will stop showing year over year increases come November. This because the price drop to $400 happened the beginning of last November.

Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

The PS2 (the fastest selling and most successful console ever) has sold 26 Million units since the beginning of 2006, and with how rapidly sales are dropping off it is (probably) not going to make it to 40 Million consoles in the post-generation years; and third party support fell off (well) over a year ago and there is still over 2 years remaining until the PS2 hits its 10th birthday. With how the PS3 has sold to date there is no reason to expect it to sell as well as the PS2 for as long as the PS2 has after this generation ends, and for third party support to be as strong as it was for the PS2 for as long as it was with the PS2; in other words, don't expect a "10 year lifecycle" to traslate into decent sales much past the 5th or 6th birthday for the PS3.

Another problem the PS3 will face if it simply tries to outlive the XBox 360 is the XBox 360 will continue to see multiplatform releases as long as the PS3 survives. EA, Activision, Ubisoft, Sega, Capcom and pretty much every major publisher will (likely) limit the risk of PS3 game development by spreading the releases to as many consoles as possible, and this would include the existing XBox 360 as well as (enhanced) releases to any new consoles that are popular enough. This means that a even after the XBox 360 is "replaced" by an enhanced system it will still have value that if it is inexpensive enough ($100) and has a large enough price advantage ($50+) it could sell enough to prevent the PS3 from passing it in total sales.

This isn't saying that the PS3 can't or won't outsell the XBox 360, just that it will take a lot more than a "10 year lifecycle" to accomplish it.

not at the moment

True, but Microsoft has to be willing to keep the 360 around for as long as the PS3 lives.

Can you at least guarantee that will be the case?

All depend of this Xmas.

IF Xbox360 strongly outsell the PS3, then yes, it willstay second

IF Xbox360 barely outsell the PS3, then it will go third in around early 2010.

Time to Work !

Well IMO the PS3 has every chance to come second this gen... but to be honbest Im pretty damn interested how will this years killer games sell on the PS3 and how many units will they move. It depends a lot on this end of the year performance...
