Congratulations at repeating exactly what I said. I said DQX would sell millions did I not? I said that not much effort was put into Swords did I not? But I suppose you can dwell in the ignorance that clearly anyone who speaks ill of the almighty wii is merely a "hater".

My point was he was downplaying the signifgance of Dragon Quest while calling Metal Gear Solid a "big franchise". Dragon Quest is in a completely different league in Japan. It would be like comparing a Grand Theft Auto spinoff to Tekken in others.

I called Dragon Quest Swords borderline shovelware - perhaps it's a little more than that, with Dragon Quest slapped onto its name. It doesn't change the fact that Metal Gear Solid is still a big franchise there (it is everywhere).

Also, just because it's DQ doesn't mean all that much for sales. These are the spinoffs VGC has data for:

Dragon Quest Monsters 2.35m 25th Nov 07

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 1.49m 25th Nov 07

Dragon Quest Monsters 2: Cobis Journey 1.16m 10th Nov 07
Dragon Quest Monsters 3: Caravan Heart 0.65m 23rd Dec 07

Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors 0.50m 28th Jul 08
Dragon Quest Monsters 2: Taras Adventure 0.40m 05th Sep 07
Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime 0.40m 05th Sep 08
Slime Mori Mori Dragon Quest 0.36m 04th Apr 08
Dragon Quest Monsters 1 & 2 0.30m 06th Nov 07
Dragon Quest Yangus 0.29m 06th Nov 07
Dragon Quest & Final Fantasy in Itadaki Street Portable 0.11m 08th Sep 07

Notice how there are Playstation titles are at the bottom? Suddenly, DQS doesn't look as bad...

My point was the comparisons weren't fair. If Monster Hunter 3 flops, then we have an arguement.

fail.

did you notice one is a ultimate hits (a release), and the other was pretty much only sold in japan and had limited print.?

Well the DQM compilation was just a re-release of the DQM GBC games so most people that wanted that already had it.

However, the Yangus spinoff had surprisingly mediocre sales for a game released so late in the PS2's life when it had an install base of like 20 million.

Looks like Swords may be at the top of the DQ console spinoff pyramid.

Though there are still some people debating how BAD the Wii was especially with third parties even with all the facts.

What do you expect? They're cherry picking and they're not doing a good job at it either.

Soul Eater had a not-so-hot debut too, however the game looked terrible (graphics-wsie) and you could tell how shady SE was being because the trailer was composed of maybe 85% animation. Strangely enough, no one really complained about that game flopping and it's even higher profile than Sky Crawlers. Licensed games sell depending on the license - a fact many people are ignoring here - and it looks like this wasn't the license that would get people to pick up the game on any console.

Actually, I'd disagree with that statement. Gaming in Japan isn't dead, it's just transferred to the handhelds (especially the DS) and to non-traditional titles. For the Wii, six titles went platinum in Japan alone, including Mario Party 8, Wii Fit, Wii Sports, and Wii Play. Six more titles went over 500k, including Mario & Sonic and Wario Ware. Four more are over 250k, and 31 games total are over 100k.

The thing is, Nintendo is dominating the list, because it's the one offering non-traditional titles. Namco and Konami are also benefitting primarily on the strength of such titles. Capcom's there too, but on the lower end, and just with traditional titles.

Long story short: gaming in Japan isn't dead, it's just evolved to the changing environment.

See, here's the problem: The X360, PS2 and PS3, despite their userbases, manage to sell core titles. Not as much as they used to, but despite the userbases, there have been some successes, again despite the user bases.

You have to realize something is wrong with your userbases' buying habits (the Wii's) when Metal Gear Solid 4 on PS3 can nearly outsell your top 2, 3rd party games on another system with well over twice the userbase.

Here's the damning list against the Wii of Top 3rd Party Console Games. All next-gen systems, with games above 100,000 units sold:

System Title Units Sold
PS3 Metal Gear Solid 4 652,101
Wii Dragon Quest Swords 502,193
PS3 Dynasty Warriors 5 411,405
PS3 Winning Eleven 2008 321,462
PS3 Devil May Cry 4 311,530
PS3 Gundam Mousou 298,005
PS3 Yakuza 3 277,287
Wii Resident Evil: UC 276,993
Wii Deca Sports 246,045
Wii Dragonball Z 3 244,432
Wii Tales of Symphonia: DoTNW 237,059
PS3 Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit 171,399
X360 Tales of Vesperia 153,125
PS3 Ridge Racer 7 153,026
PS3 Valkyria Chronicles 150,324
PS3 Blade Storm 141,905
PS3 Gundam: Target In Sight 139,296
Wii Resident Evil 4 138,593
Wii Powerful Pro Baseball 138,252
Wii Family Trainer 137,380
Wii Family Ski 136,566
PS3 Soul Calibur IV 133,973
PS3 Call of Duty 4: MW 128,754
PS3 Pro Yakuu Spirits 111,546
Wii Gundam 0079 111,091
Wii Chocoboo's Mysterious Dungeon 110,220
PS3 Disgaea 3 108,977
Wii Winning Eleven Playmaker 108,803
Wii One Piece Unltd. Adv. 107,594
X360 Infinite Undiscovery 106,403
Wii Master of Festivals 104,960
Wii Shiren the Wanderer 3 103,772
X360 Dead or Alive 4 103,150

Wii Total Sales 2,703,953

PS3 Total Sales 3,510,990

X360 Total Sales 362,678

As it stands, The Playstation 3 is the best seller of 3rd party software over 100k (and most likely entirely). Period. Maybe that's me, but if console has almost 1/3rd the hardware units in the wild, yet are outselling your competition, there's a massive problem. I'm not going to comment further than this, because I think the numbers speak for themselves.

This list proves absolutely nothing.

Well, that's not true. It proves that the big franchises that sold very well on PS2 are still very popular. And that these big 3rd party franchises are not on Wii. Closest comes Dragon Quest Swords, which is absolutely ridiculous to compare with MGS4. And maybe Tales, which sold fine. Problem for the 3rd parties is: they don't have many big franchises coming for Wii. Capcom does and is going to sell over a million Monster Hunters. And the new Dysnasty Warriors is on Wii and should be a testcase.

Also you act like Nintendo games don't matter, but the truth is that they compete with the 3rd party games. Mario Kart, Brawl, Galaxy and Twilight Princess all sold over 500.000. Not to mention things like WiiSports and WiiFit.

The sad thing about the PS3 games on that list is that if you add 1st party there is little improvement. The Wii's 3rd party sales are not bad, PS3's are better.

End of 2009 Predictions (Set, January 1st 2009)

Wii- 72 million   3rd Year Peak, better slate of releases

360- 37 million   Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak

PS3- 29 million  Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut

too be honest however good this game in its still a niche movie tie in being released 2 months after the movie. i thik marvellous games should be a better judge of wii third party sales

nintendo fanboy, but the good kind

proud soldier of nintopia

That namco game did quite well..... I think....

4 ≈ One

We'll see how well it sells throughout the week... Wii Fit (whose success Nintendo is obviously trying to duplicate with Wii Music) sold 250k in its first week in Japan.

Sky Crawlers bombed..

People around here still think the battle is between TV consoles in Japan. Outside of big projects that will do well overseas, handhelds are where all the gaming support is going.

PSP and DS are taking most of the potential PSWii60 3rd party support as of late in Japan.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials
