Forums - Nintendo - If it weren't for Wii, I wouldn't own a console this gen.

You know, all that sounds wonderful, but the fact remains; buying a console is about 48 times more covenient than doing all that stuff you just mentioned.

Console gaming:

-Buy a console

-To upgrade, buy another console every 5-6 years

PC gaming, according to you:

-buy a new Mobo, processor, RAM and Video card.

-use firefox instead of internet explorer, use eset and bitdefender's online scanners to scan your computer periodically, and use a virtual system like returnil <--- all this to avoid malware that will slow down your PC, something that is nonexistent on consoles

-get a 160GB Sata HDD

-To upgrade: buy a really good processor and sell your old one to someone for 75% value, I'm assuming this is what you do for other parts as well, in addition to actually installing these parts

If you don't at least see WHY people prefer console gaming, then you're just being a blind fanboy. Console gaming is SO much more convenient than PC gaming, and it's cheaper too. That's all I'm trying to say; believe me when I say that I don't hate PC gamers. I just hate when people take one-sided opinions (maybe that's what I'm doing right now, if so, by all means go ahead and prove everything I just said wrong).

Are consoles more convenient? Yes.

Are consoles cheaper? No.

Do consoles give a better value for your money? No.

Sure, consoles are simple and easy, you only need to buy it once and likely not care about upgrades until next generation. But they are not cheaper or give you a better experience. PCs are getting cheaper and more intuitive, while the consoles are moving the other way (more expensive and less intuitive).

PC games are $10-$40 cheaper than console games. Hell, PC even has hundreds of free games that are supported by advertisement or micro transactions, and they are better than many retail games around. Battlefield Heroes, Fifa Online 2, Quake Live, etc...

Another big thing to consider is that PC games drop price way faster than console games, and that is perfect for people who don't care about getting it day 1.

Fact: A PC gamer will eventually cover the intial cost of his PC by saving money PC games.

Fact: PC has the best online experience, and free!!

Fact: Upgrading is becoming more and more obsolete because the games requirements are slowing down.

Fact: PC has more games than all consoles combined

Fact: PC gives you the best value for your money

All the things you said that firefox and upgrades and such, it's pointless. Even if a person doesn't have the knowledge to make such tweakings, as long as he buys a gaming PC he will keep using it for years (hell, I bet it will even last a generation, if not more)

Fact: I'm Awesome

Fact: PC Gaming has been around for like 20 years. Each consoles life is only about what 5 or 6 years? Except with the exception of Xbox (4 years) and PS2 (7 years and counting)

Fact: Controllers own Keyboard/Mouse. Just because its easier to aim with mouse than a joystick, doesn't mean its better. it just means its easier an you have less skill.

Fact: I'm #1

Fact: The only good PC games are the Sims and Roller Coaster Tycoon

Fact: 360 has Red Ring of Death

Exactly, the first time I experienced user-created content was in 1994 - somebody had replaced all the demons in Doom with Barney.  Then I started making my own levels, recreated my highschool, perfected a deathmatch map, and downloaded thousands of others.

This explains so much.

But Nintendo announcing a 1:1 movement sword fighting game?  I've never experienced that before.   Nobody has!  That's why we experienced gamers love Wii so much.

Why is it that Wii owners are still excited over the potential of the system, when that system has yet to deliver on the promise of that potential?

"Next year I'll be able to buy another peripheral that will improve an inaccurate motion-sensing control system...you know, the same broken control scheme that is so REVOLUTIONARY that it needs fixing!"

Nintendo only wants to keep selling peripherals and marketing double-speak...and guys like frybread are eating it up like bon-bons.

Here I was thinking it was the PS3 people bought for "potential" (after you get a second job of course)

The Wii has massive future potential yes, but in most people eyes it has achieved considerably more than either of the other consoles in terms of great games (which it now has in droves, albeit a good 50% thanks to Nintendo themselves) This is why it sells well.

If the console is as you say, still not living up to the others, then why is it still selling more than the combined totals of the other two.... Had it not built up a decent library of games by now it would have been the fad that the doubters thought it was nearly 2 years ago.... A console cannot sell so well for 2 years straight with nothing going for it.

As for the potential for the motion controlls, whether or not Nintendo matched expectations is a matter of opinion.  I am impressed with Madden's use of the controls, as using the controller to juke, stiff arm, and passing reduces the amount of buttons that I have to memorize and recall "on the fly".

As for other games, using the wii-mote for aiming has it's obvious advantage.  If your pointer is way off from where you are pointing it at the screen, move the sensor bar.  Another game that uses the wii-mote well is Resident Evil 4.  I played the game a lot with a joystick, and I can tell you the experience is much better with the wii-mote.

I’m surprised that one other feature of PC gaming that has been hardly mentioned is the unique advantages of PC gaming on a notebook. Now granted a really nice gaming notebook costs more than a console (excepting perhaps the original PS3 (LOL) but it doesn’t really cost more than a good quality notebook (which many of us need anyway plus the cost of a console, and if you’re really lucky it’s free because the boss will pay for it). In any case you’ll make a lot of it back in the cost savings from the game and let’s face it, it does a damn sight more useful things, even things like make a living.

But here’s a trump card that hasn’t been played. I can fold up the whole system, including HD monitor throw it in a shoulder bag and take it with me. Given the number of places that have free or very inexpensive WiFi I can online game in Starbucks, in a hospital waiting room (at least at my hospital) and especially nice, (even sanity protecting) in an airport when stuck with a six hour layover because of a missed connection, overbooking etc. I don’t recall anyone ever playing their PS3 in the airport bar but maybe I missed it.

There is a myth that notebooks cannot ever really game and indeed they will never be as powerful as a desktop, because of heat if nothing else. But I just got a Dell XPS 1530, admittedly a deluxe system and not the cheapest (just under $1k US) but it is needed for work (I do serious imaging) so I paid nothing additional for gaming. For my money I got:

2.5 GHz Core 2 Duo (6 MB cache)

64 bit OS

4GB RAM (good thing about 64 bit)

360 GB HD SATA 5400RPM (72 would have been nice but we live in an imperfect universe) big enough to hold plenty of games but if need be there are plenty of 7200 RPM portable disks available and with USB2, IEEE1394 (built in) or even SATA possible ($30 express card), perfectly usable

NVIDIA 8600M GT video card with a modest 256MB onboard but it can borrow another 1750MB of system RAM when needed (another advantage of 4GB)

1440x900 resolution ( 1920x1200 is available but frankly on a 15 inch screen it makes things mighty tiny and I’m tired of lugging around a 17”)

And for all the PS3 fans, a Blu-ray player (DVD burner), a feature so unimportant to me personally that I had the system a week before I realized it played Blu-ray but the HDMI out should have been a clue.

Anyway totaling up the package we have a performance number of 5.0 (limited by memory speed) but given the 64bit/4GB system, unlikely to seriously handicap me and a gaming graphics number of 5.9 so I fear no game current or foreseeable future. So I probably won’t play Crysis 2 with everything turned all the way up and get a frame rate of 200 like a $4K US liquid cooled neon lit desktop monster but close enough and given that I have no particular desire to play Crysis anyway. I’ll live with it.

The truth is I’ll do 90% of my gaming on the Wii anyway but it is nice to have the option and to be able to take some games on the road.

Console sales have very little to do with anything except the gullibility of the buying public, and good marketing.

The Wii library is laughable for a console with such a large user base.  We see shovelware title after shovelware title, and hear about "AAA" titles like Animal Crossing (meh) and Wii Music (double meh) that are "coming".

Past the 4 or 5 good exclusives for the Wii (the other top ones are ports), it's a vast wasteland of mediocrity.
