Forums - Sony - Blu-ray could be the next UMD, says MS

Falcon095 said:

I'm saying that both were plan from the companies, bobobologna suggested that people should hate MS because they used the HD-DVD to delay the Blu-Ray adoption, so i if that the case people should hate Sony because they used the PS3 to make faster the Blu-Ray adoption.

Just to clarify, I didn't say that people should hate Microsoft.  I think you are reading a bit too much into what I said.

its confirmed....................

i doubt it very very much that xbox fans or wii fans for that matter would kick up a fuss if bluray was included into xbox 360 or wii`s

That ain't matter, both companies had a plan and used their customers to make that plan work. MS had a good system with good games, acceptable price (don't remember the price, tough) and didn't force anyone to pay 100-150$ to watch HD movies, on the other hand Sony had a good system with almost no good games and forced you to pay 500-600$ to watch HD movies and play videogames. So in that point of view who's worst, the one that offers something that justify the price (mainly because it's cheaper) and gives you options or the one that offers something tha doesn't justify the price and don't give you options?

I think that's very shortsighted and a tunnel vision perspective. Various multi-platform devs have complained about the storage limitations of only 6.8 GB for XBox 360 dual layer DVDs.

The choice for a Blu-Ray drive is a correct decision for the long term potential of the PS3 with regard to gaming. More than 7 times the available space on a 50 GB PS3 Blu-Ray disc, ideal for very large games with lots of high quality graphics variety and even lossless 7.1 audio, constant predictable streaming speeds, great for optimizing data delivery especially in combination with the default harddrive (a la Uncharted: Drake's Fortune), no more disc scratch issues and a very low level noise production.

Blu-Ray disc is highly desirable from a gaming perspective for a high-end gaming system. Excellent Blu-Ray movie playback support is either an optional bonus someone may want to make use of now or in course of time or crucial to those who want an all in one multi-media solution. The drive costs far more than the included playback software.

You're definitely right on that.  It's nice to be able to fit a huge game all on one disc.  But for those of us who prefer the 360 over the PS3, how much of a pain is it REALLY to have to get up and switch discs once, maybe twice, over the course of the entire game?  Doesn't bother me one bit.  And if it does bother me, I can always chose to install the game on my hard drive.  The nice thing is that it's my choice.  I'm not required to install anything.

I think you are forgetting two important factors.

1) You are talking about a linear game, for this 1 dual layer Blu-Ray disc potentially equals about 8-10 dual layer DVDs. An exact figure depends on the game design in question, data duplication will be done. Audio and graphics on the first and follow up discs need to be duplicated on discs when re-used. For example a streamed texture may be used in the first part of the game (disc 1), but also in further parts of the game and for comfort such data is then duplicated for follow up parts of the game to prevent disc swapping.

If talking about a non-linear game, where you are able to or even required to revisit previously cleared areas this complicates things a lot and far more disc swapping may be the result.

2) Due to additional costs (read recent ID Software comments for example) and game design requirements for developers/publishers, they will usually make sacrifices (for example GTA IV would have come with more content if they could fully rely on bigger storage media, also lowered quality audio and graphics and/or less data varierty / more re-usage of data).

Yeah, who better to force their users into a technology than Apple?  It's what they excel at.

I think you mean "offer the option", as I am sure the lower end units will only have DVD.

To bad Vista does not offer that option :p At least the 360 will.

The next DVD-like format will be whatever comes after Blu-Ray. As of right now, Blu-Ray is the next LaserDisc/SACD/UMD.

Fanboy.

BluRay has already outpaced those formats pretty clearly.

MS already burned its FUD allowance by claiming earlier that Blu-Ray would be the next Betamax.  Oh, clever, they've picked another format to compare it to.  MS: you lost and cost Toshiba billions and your codecs are not in use in HD media in the living room!!!! aHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAAHAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Universal is now hard at work with the Blu-Ray transfers, which are higher quality than their earlier HD-DVD ones.  Why don't we ask f-ing Universal Pictures if Blu-Ray has a future, huh people?

Blu-Ray isn't going anywhere.  10% of people on Netflix already rent Blu-Ray, sales are pretty good, and the numbers will keep increasing as standalone prices drop and more PS3s get out there.  The recession (thanks, lack-of-oversight-during-6-years-of-unified-Republican-rule) will doubtless slow adoption a bit.  Oh well.

Leave your sensationlist bullshit off of the Games Board and bitch in Off Topic. Thank you.

I don't mind the dig at the economy, i just wish he better understood the problem. The issue started with Carter, and then was really put into motion with sub prime lending by the Clinton Administration. All of what is in washington over the last 16 year is crap. But to single out one party is a little naive.

Honestly, the real blame is on the people of the US. We just don't care who we elect anymore.

I remember Lands of Lore III, quite big game world, hub based, non linear with necessity to revisit some places, so a lot of disc swap was required, it was quite annoying (*)

(*) more than the fact that the game was released  too hastily (most bugs were eventually corrected by patches, only two noticeable ones remained, not preventing game completion, and obviously remained the non uniform care in graphics, with good lighting, but very bad flat backgrounds in a lot of places)

BR is just not that much better than DVD and people everywhere know it. That is why BR sales are so low at the moment. Why do I have to pay more for something I don't really want?

The cheapest BR player is still over $200; everyone already owns a DVD player.

Even if I had a PS3, I wouldn't by BR movies because it is just not smart from an economic view.

I'm not sure what you even mean by that.  Vista is totally capable of BluRay playback/writing.  And I'd venture to say that if there really is a BluRay add on coming out for the 360, it will probably be able to connect to PCs as well.
