Forums - Gaming Discussion - SOE: All future MMOGs console-bound

EQ has a rabid fan base, but so do nearly every little niche game out there. Sure, it's bigger than most, but what's the current population of EQ and EQ II...maybe a few 100k combined (BTW, I don't know the exact figure, so correct me if I'm wrong), which is a LONG way from evercrack. Like I said, I'm in POTBS, and it's a good game, but nothing earth shattering...WOW is the de facto standard, and unless you bring some to the table that signifigantly improves on it, you're not going to win over on that game. Of course, Blizzard knows this, and they are going to launch a MASSIVE update to WOW in the next upgrade after WOTLK, imho. Probably seriously update the grapics, and adopt many of the newer mechanics that others are currently implementing.

EQ2's subscriber base was at 250k at the last count. Nothing compared to WoW but EQ2 has much more content. Whats WoW on its second expansion? EQ2 has number five coming out next month and that isn't including the adventure packs or the free contents and dungeons that SOE periodically adds. They just added a new instance, Veksar, and added 50 new quests to Everfrost, one of the games original zones over the past two weeks.

mmo's on ps3 can help expand its online community even further.

I hope being under the control of SCE will lead to an increase in the quality of their games. SCE has really been stepping up this generation (and they've always kicked ass), but SOE has always been a pretty weak studio, outside of Everquest and that brief period when Star Wars Galaxies was good.

Outside of a few EverQuest spin-offs, their only console games up until this point have been the Untold Legends series, which were garbage.

Agree with this.  I was a big EQ player that played since launch but every other SOE game since then I've tried has been very lackluster.  SW:G was good for a time until they put in the new "experience" and ruined that as well.  I don't have much faith in SOE anymore.  I'm also skeptical about all of these MMO announcements for both 360 & PS3.  I just don't see the control scheme to make a good in-depth MMO. This is one genre that should stick to PC's IMHO.

I agree but if they want to waste money on it let them go ahead. I don't really see this enticing anyone who's already into the genre. I only see this targeting console owners that may be curious as to how an MMO is. Kind of like FFXI....

And EVE is one of the deepest game, and most complex games on the market, with an truly MASSIVE environment?  The point is this, WoW is massive in more than the technical sense, but it's massive in it's appeal, and hte ability for someone new to the genre to get involved and not feel clueless.  I think Blizzard understands the need to get more ongoing content into the game, and starting with WOTLK, WoW is going to re-define itself..

I don't want to get into a WoW versus EQ2 debate. I will simply speak for myself when I say that WoW is simply too dumbed down and simplistic for me to enjoy. I can see the appeal for someone that hasn't had any experience in the genre but other wise for me it is an average game with low requirements that allow it to run on practically any PC.

We can agree to disagree on the "dumb-down" on the genre, but have you had a chance to try POTBS yet?  I have been VERY pleasantly surprised at the game, as it's like an updated version of Pirates with extensive MMO action.  I've always loved that age of sail period in the Carribean, and this game nails it nicely.  If you get a chance, check out the 14-day trail, you might like it.  nothing to sway me from my WoW addiction, but it'll do as break from time to time.  The problem with MMO's is thatthey take SO MUCH TIME, once you get into it.  I'm going to buy like 10- 360 games this holiday season, but once WOTLK comes out, they are all gong to collect dust for months...most likely.

Yeah tell me about it. I've been messing around with the added EQ2 content, the just did another game update yesterday, and I haven't been playing my 360 or Wii much at all lately. I need to hurry up and finish Tales of Vesperia before Tales of Symphonia: DotNW is released. Not to mention I have to pick up Infinite Undiscover sooner or later. I am actually glad IU is short. Vesperia is a long game with tons of sidequest and will require multiple play throughs for me to get everything.

I often wish I didn't play and MMO because it really monopolizes my free time for significant periods of time. In fact, I always tell people that are thinking of starting an MMO "DON'T!!!." MMO's are moving targets and you can never do everything and get everything in an MMO. Depending on your personality, you could end up ignoring family friends and other hobbies. I think thats part of the reason why console makers haven't really pushed MMOs. It could adversely effect their software sales.

No to devolve into a theraphy session, but you're absolutely right...MMOs can really turn on your "ignore" button, wrt to everything else in your life...more so than normal games. GTA was engrossing, but I've put it down for a while, as was lost odessey, but that darn WoW....I feel like I'm neglecting by "job" when I don't play...or that I'm cheating on it...lol...sad. I'll of this while rasing a family and giving the wifey enough time...tough tough order. So, are MMOs ggood for sonsoles...I'd say no. If 360/PS3 got a title like WoW...it would suck away from overall game sales, imho.
