At the end of 2006, the PS2 had sold 120 million copies. That is a lot.

If you add together the sales for the Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360, you get around 70 million.

Now, PS2+GC+XBOX sold around 170 million. Let's say of the 50 million from the GC and Xbox, 30 million were-

Okay, this is getting confusing. Basically, 120 million people had PS2's. 170 million owned 6th gen consoles. 70 million now own 7th Gen consoles. Where has everybody gone? Are they still happy with their 6th gens? Given up gaming altogether? Mysteriously died? What is going on?

Also why are people still buying PS2's?

The 6th Gen consoles.....well, at least the PS2 is still awesome. Non BC and price I think kept many from making the jump to the PS3. The PS3 is a great console, but I think a lot of people are still extremely happy with their slim PS2's.

I still enjoy my PS2 even though I am in love with my Elite and Wii. There are just SOOO many good games on the PS2, that it is hard to deny the continuing enjoyment. Sony has recognized that the PS2 it is still a flagship console and is still making money off of it. Some of my friends still only play their PS2's and as of yet, purchased a 360, Wii, or PS3.

You're comparing 8 years to 2-3 years. In addition a lot of the PS2's purchased(I'm willing to put money on this) are repurchases for newer model or replacement. Also throw in a lot of overlap, every Gamecube owners could have possibly had a PS2(I know they didn't but it's possible) so the number could effectively be about 15% less or even lower than the figure you're quoting.

Essentially you're putting a number that's about 150% higher(it's about 2.5 times the total units sold) than current in 400% of the time. By my count the 7th gen is not only healthy but healthier than the 6th

The 360 is selling faster than the X-box, the Wii is selling phenomenally greater than the Gamecube and the PS3, despite selling much lower than the PS2, is still selling better than either of the second or third place consoles last gen. The gamers are gaming. Sure many are waiting for the current gen consoles to become cheaper or specific games to come out, but by and large this gen is kicking last gens ass.

          LOL, you are right, my wifey likes the slims look, but the one I use to play any games on is the original sized beast.  I prefer it, seems more reliable.  I do not, however, have the modded with gianormous titties!

I know some people who have had 5 PS2. Though that's a rare. I found that most of my PS friends have purchased 2 since launch. I don't have a single PS friend that had only 1. Either they had to buy another because it broke or wanted the new model. This anecdotal information is pretty much the immidiate standard among my friend chain.

I however have only had 1 PS2 Slim. I play maybe on average 3 hours a month. Generaly playing in spurts of 10 hours a season. My mother in law has only had 1 PS2. Plays more that me, but my friends that are serious gamers. At least 2.

I would probably say about the average PS2 owner has had 1.5 to 1.7 as a guestimate based on forum anecdotal hearsay. This doesn't quit have the actual user base of the PS2, but would put at it more around 80-90 actuall user base.

Yeah. I magree with what .jay is saying, there probably were a lot of double buys.

I think another thing is that parents looked at it in the later/cheaper years as a good idea for a kids DVD player so to speak, since it could do both and they wanted their expensive DVD player for themselves kinda thing. Depending on what kind of family you are from, of course, but theyre a lot of well to do families whose kids don't share.
