You're comparing 8 years to 2-3 years. In addition a lot of the PS2's purchased(I'm willing to put money on this) are repurchases for newer model or replacement. Also throw in a lot of overlap, every Gamecube owners could have possibly had a PS2(I know they didn't but it's possible) so the number could effectively be about 15% less or even lower than the figure you're quoting.
Essentially you're putting a number that's about 150% higher(it's about 2.5 times the total units sold) than current in 400% of the time. By my count the 7th gen is not only healthy but healthier than the 6th
