I'm not surprised. MKWii is going to be the best selling game after 12 months out.

As for Wii Fit, it's at 7603K. Halo 3 is at 8212K

Wii Fit sells ~ 220K each week
Halo 3 sells ~ 20K each week

So it's going to be incredibly close in 3 weeks.

Wii Fit will probably pass MKWii in just a few weeks though (less than 8), so the glory of best selling single plat console game won't be Mario Kart's for long.

Amazing sales over a long period of time.
People have to realise that appealing to wider than present audience is always one of the major objectives of any form of entertainment. Even Halo3 did that with its advertising blitz, making people who maybe hadnt played the games yet, want it.

im not terribly surprised, I feel though it has far more to do with a lack of variety of racing games, and thing of other flavors that sell on the wii, if it is made by nintendo, right now it sells very well, how many non nintendo non mario featuring games are wii million sellers?

also as for halo, look at its competition amongst shooters, heck even ms has two mosterous shooters on its current console, and 3rd parites do two. the difference is in available selection, less selection will drive sales of gems of that flavor of game type.

outside of that the original super mario kart was better, as was double dash

I counted 12 non-nintendo published games that don't feature Mario as million sellers.

You liked Double Dash more than this new game? Wow you're the first person I've ever met online who thinks that way, most fans hate DD compared to the other games in the series.

I blame Wii Fit!

Not surprising at all. Mariokart was always a very strong franchise (as strong if not stronger then halo depending on what time period we're talking about). Put on top of that the huge success of the wii and its not surprising at all. The fact that halo 3 has held onto the top position for this long is impressive (as is its selling power, it really boosted the 360's sales when it came out). The reality is, this isn't a zero sum game. The fact that an FPS and a kart game on different console can both sell over 8 million copies (and probably over 10 million for both, obviously halo will get there much later) is amazing. This gen is great because everybody is doing relatively well.
