I'm going to start things off with what may very well be my #1 favorite game of all time, Star Fox SNES. Now, this is a monster of a game. The whole gameplay is top-notch and the voice-acting, while fantastic, got the job done and was relatively new for a game at that time (it was new to me anyway).

Woah!  Good thing I caught that in time!

OT: Great read; I think I feel slighty the same way about SMG, but it's been a while since I've played it.

Okami

To lavish praise upon this title, the assumption of a common plateau between player and game must be made.  I won't open my unworthy mouth.

I agree, the N64 was the best.

I agree with the Star Fox series comments. We could really use a good classic Star Fox.

My thoughts:

Starfox 64 (Lylat Wars to me)... never owned in on the 64, and have regretted buying it on the Virtual Console, I think I was just too late to this game, and it hasn't aged well, if I could sell VC games back to Nintendo I would with this.

Starfox Adventures... I really like this game, but it is a little easy and too short, but what's there is very good.

Not played the other Starfox games.

------

LoZ: OoT.... I went mental over this game the first time I played it, I generally push myself away form anything that seems to be very popular, so I never bought this for the N64, however I played it at my friends house and as I said, loved it. We took it in turns playing to complete the game over the next 3 days (only the main story, we were not great at gaming then)
I don't think of it as the best game of all time or anything, it has certainly aged a little (If I were to ignore graphical capabilities and review this game now, I would give it 85-90%... which is impressive, but not as high as it was when released)

LoZ: WW.... I still view this as my favourite game of all the ones I have played, people complained about various things in it (cell shading, triforce quest, sailing) but I loved every bit of it, and so far, although it is only last gen, I don't think it has aged at all, it's still as good as ever.

LoZ:TP.... Epicness in a box, a very fine game indeed, I do feel there was something missing to make it as brilliant as WW, and I think part of it might be originallity.

-------

SM64.... Again I never had this on the N64, however I do have it on the VC, and I think like OoT it has kept a lot of it's magic, perhaps more-so.

SMSunshine.... Never played it, looks fun though.

SMGalaxy.... Simply amazing, all the way from beginning to the end, after which I was very sad I had completed it and had to go back to lesser games... In my view this far exceeds SM64, again it could be my not playing SM64 in it's time, but I think I would still rate this higher even if I hadn't waited until 2007 for SM64.

Can I add a series to the mix?

Mario Kart Wii >>> Mario Kart Double Dash >>>>>>> Mario Kart 64.

great post, it's great to talk about the old n64, although my favourite games for the n64 were the two banjo kazooie games, closely followed by all the ones that you said, and everyone got stuck on the water temple, lol.

I personally prefered majoras mask to ocarina, although they were both beautiful games. I never got to play any of the starfox games after the 64 version, which is a shame. I really think that the game for wii is going to be one of the greats of this gen.

As for mario galaxy, I still feel that M64 was better, but thats probably nostalgia :)

great post

Really? I think Mario Kart 64 is the best one XD

Nothing will compare to the original 3d Mario, Zelda and Starfox. It's because they were all truly revolutionary and its difficult to innovate from that, but at least Nintendo have tried.

SMG is wonderfully innovative, Zelda WW is an interesting attempt at variation, SF should be a shooter only.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Since we're all having such a nice time in this little thread, I feel that I've got to ask... Have any of you played Mystical Ninja: Starring Goemon for the N64? The first one. That game is sooo much fun and lasts for so long, I can't believe it didn't get more attention.

My friend is obsessed with that game!

Super Mario 64 and OoT both suffer from "first game of the series that is in 3D" syndrome. For certain people, the amount of awe that is generated from that jump could not be surpassed by subsequent games.

Games have run out of dimensions to exploit, so I guess the awe has peaked with the N64.
