Super Mario 64 and OoT both suffer from "first game of the series that is in 3D" syndrome. For certain people, the amount of awe that is generated from that jump could not be surpassed by subsequent games.
Games have run out of dimensions to exploit, so I guess the awe has peaked with the N64.
