Forums - Sales - Sony- what price cut??

davygee said:

The 360 is in serious need of a pricecut, but the problem is this. More PS3's are being shifted in the Other Regions than 360's, why is this happening? The PS3 is approx £400 in the UK, and the 360 is only £190 for the Core and £280 for the Premium. The Elite is due out at the end of August for £330. So the 360 has a significantly cheaper console range and they have a bigger and supposedly better software range....well why is the PS3 selling more in this region?

The same is happening in Japan as well.

In North America, it is a different case altogether. The 360 is shifting double the number of units of the PS3. But this gap of only 17k should reduce significantly with the latest PS3 price drop.

All in all. I think MS is in trouble with the 360. They are out $1.1b with the whole RROD problem and are expected to reduce costs to get back on track. They have just broken the 10m units sold worldwide last month and the number of units sold is dwindling all the time. There is ony 4k units between WW sales of the 360 and the PS3 at the moment, both coming in just over 50k WW each week. Once the pricecut settles in NA and the new package in other areas, I reckon we will easily see PS3 sales being significantly more WW than 360.

So MS WILL have to make a pricecut sooner rather than later or, Sony will be eating into their chunk of the Europe and will be racing away in Japan. So MS will only be left with NA to fight it out.

It's funny that you're quoting prices in British Pounds, a currency belonging to a country where the 360 is still outselling the PS3.

Overall in the "Others" region, the PS3 outsold the 360 by about 20% last week, which is not big enough a difference to say that MS is in trouble with the 360. Especially when the installed base is about 3 times bigger for the 360.

It's almost for sure that the 360 will do a price cut this year, and there'll be changes to the PS3 pricing too, so the real battle will be fought as we get closer to Christmas. The current sales difference doesn't warrant much more than a "eh..." reaction.

I think this is a huge indication of popularity at the moment.  The PS3 costs more than double the 360 in all "Other Regions", yet the PS3 is selling as you stated 20% more in this region.

This tells me that there is a bigger problem for MS, than just the release of the PS3 will a small supply of games.  Maybe the public just don't want a machine from MS or they don't trust the build of the machine with all the latest press of negativity.

Yes, both the 360 and PS3 will get pricecuts in this region.

Prediction (June 12th 2017)

Permanent pricedrop for both PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro in October.

PS4 Slim $249 (October 2017)

PS4 Pro $349 (October 2017)

It's true that the 20GB PS3 plays PS3 games just as well as the others do. So, it is a 'complete' PS3, in the same sense that a car with no radio or A/C, but normal acceleration, gas mileage, etc., is a 'complete' car.

In fact, my car DOES have no A/C and a radio on the fritz; it is still a 'complete' car, and I'll keep driving it, but I wouldn't buy it from someone else unless I was desperate.

ROTFLMBO ... I had a car with no A/C ... in Mississippi. Dang, it was hotter than a hooker in church!

But ... I do think the 360 needs a price cut, but consider this - even after the Euro release, and the slight bump in sales, the 360 is still holding steady. A price cut would doom Sony.

Yeah, M$ is losing money, but do they care? They just want to win the war. That's all. And beat Sony. Look at M$'s history and you'll see they are all about domination. Not saying that's a good thing, but they are tenacious competitors.

I am awaiting the VG chartz ... it will be a big bump, but is it sustainable? We'll see. But even now, $499 is still a lot to spend on a system without several heavy-hitter games out yet. The 360 may be losing ground in Europoe and Australia, but goodness ... they are still selling systems and extending its overall lead.

If this next round of PS3 games aren't much more graphically advanced, why should a person on the sidelines buy a PS3 that will be discountinued shortl? It would be in their best interest to just wait it out ...

As far as the PS3 outselling the 360 - dang, the 360 has been out 2 years almost and the PS3 is still new. Give it some time ... the sales will decrease over time for the PS3 when the newness wears off ...

If we focus between the PS3 and Xbox360 that are competting for the same nich, Xbox360 is cheaper, possess plenty of good game, and just stolen a lot exclusivity. At the opposite, PS3 is more stable that Xbox360 that possess a 30% failure rate, but since microsoft give back ur money ...it is not as bad for Xbox360. And what about sales ?
PS3 sales = Xbox360 sales.
And in fact last week, PS3 sales > Xbox360 sales.
and I dont even mention that EXCEPT UK, PS3 is over Xbox360 in all the others PAL country.
Believe me, Microsoft may have sold 10 M console, their main user base is in NA
It would be hard for sony to compete Microsoft in NA
But out of NA, Micrsooft is nothing.
European people are draming about Wii and PS3
Japanese people are dreaming about Wii.

And Who need to buy a xbox360 ?
TRUE exclusive game (not coming to PC) : Mass Effect and Halo3 : 2 games MAN !!!!

Mass Effect : may be the better westernRPG
but it is not something that really appeal casual console gamer that is not used to play a lot of RPG

Halo3 : big point for North Amercia market, OK
but who cares in europe or in japan ?

Sony exclusive for 2007 :
Heavenly Sword (I predict it will be the system seller) / Lair / Unchartred / Haze / UT3 (both timed exclusive) / GT5 prologue / Folklore / Eye of Judgement / Ratchet on clank
Just wait TGS or Liepzig show (in august)

Time to Work !

I hear you, but just look at the big sellers on the VGChartz for the PS2 and the Xbox. Notice a trend? Yeah ... guess what game series for the PS2 was tops ... GTA. Yeah ... and now, it's coming on both systems, with M$ buying 2 extra episodes. The only game listed that was in the PS2's top 5 is ... Gran Turismo ... and the rest of the games, while they *may* move a few systems, history is a great teacher and Halo series has moved close to 15 million games total.

Time will tell - but based on ... a price cut, 2 SKUs deleted and a lack of sick games right now ... there absolutely no compelling reason to pay over $499 for a PS3. And I like a choice. I don't like folks shoving things down my throat. I could care less about a card reader - a Blu-Ray player and the like. I want to play cool games right now ... not in a few months. You can spend $299 for a 360 that still can play games ...

Just look at the facts - the Wii has proven in less than 8 months, they are just inches from taking the lead. SONY has to do three things to win this - they have to compell folks to buy a PS3 and not a Wii or 360 ... they have to permanently cut prices to $399 for the 60gb or 80gb model ... AND ... they have to have great games NOW.

Just because the PS2 won the last-gen wars doesn't mean the PS3 will win this. There are tons of reasons why it's failing. It's in 3rd overall. Yeah, it is selling in other areas ... but overall - it's trailing far, far behind everything else. Don't believe me ... look at the charts on this site ...

I just want to point out that unless you don't save games you can't just spend $300 on a 360.  Also, if you want to do anything online (like, I dunno, patch games, DLC, demos, etc) you'll need the $180 120GB HD (or the "cheap" 20GB HD at $100).

Also, the PS3 has great games now as well.  That argument is outdated.

As I've said already, the Core unit is a waste of time without the hard drive.  MS should just get rid of it.

*FACT - you can still play games. Buy a $20 memory card and save your games. It's still a lot cheaper than spending $600 on an overhyped, undercooked machine that can find a cure for cancer, but for the life of it can't find out how to boost sales unless you have a $100 price cut.

Check this ... the PS3 has been out since ... November, 2006. How many games have hit the million mark? Just Resistance. Nice ... and check out the Wii, which came out the same time the B$3 came out ...

Wow ... 3.69 million PS3s sold ... and only 1 game has cracked the mark. Look at the Wii ... and the 360. Yes, you may not have a hard drive, or Blu Ray, or built-in HDMI or wifi, but you do have the ability to play a lot of cool games and not waste time playing 'Calling all cars' or running the GT demo into a coma ...

As far as the 360 Core, you have a choice - add an HD and stuff or not. But it's your choice. Sony has made that choice for gamers. That's sad - but regardless, you have a choice - and it starts at $299, not $499.

@madskillz,

Hi man,
you saied :
"Time will tell - but based on ... a price cut, 2 SKUs deleted and a lack of sick games right now ... there absolutely no compelling reason to pay over $499 for a PS3"

I say,

- price cut,
At least, ... there is one !!!!
If we consider amazon.com and some others shop sold out, there is something happening about PS3 sales even if it may be a low and short.
At least, there is an effect. So in USA, PS3 demand is still existant.
About starter pack in europe, it is not coming before 1st august,
so wait and see

-sku deleted ?
you mean GTa4 exclusive content coming on Xbox360 and NOT on PS3 ?
I agree that this game was THE game of the PS2 generation (San andrea sales...). So yes, to have some exclusivity (partial) on this game is clearly a VERY good point for Microsoft.
But there is still something I find strange : why do not say to everybody that u possess this exclusivity ?
where was GTa4 at microsoft show ? NO ! Why microsoft is not making interview to talk about this special content ?
When u have a nuclear weapon, u show it to everybody, to make everybody respect you.
When u have a system seller, u show it to everybody, to make everybody buy ur console...
I think there is an answer that can explain why microsoft is not improving the hype about the exclusive content:
http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3161246
I suppose we will have some surprises about exclusive content ...wait and see.

- lack of sick game right now,
Sorry but what is coming is SO BIG.
Xbox360 possess already some big games but PS3 will have big games too
(just a question of weeks now).
I suppose it depends of which games u want to play ...
wait and see again...

madskillz,

IF PS3 20gb was a COMPLETE PS3 it would have sold better ...
It may be a complete PS3 in ur mind but for customers things seem different. It is why they dont bought this 3/4 PS3.

And right now, considering the not bad sales in Amazon.com, it seems that the PS3 60gb is considered as a COMPLETE PS3 which is sold for 500$.

U can think what u want, since the sales show u that u are wrong.

u saied : "They won the PS2/Xbox scrap because of GTA exclusivity. That single-handedly killed the Xbox ... "

lol, Xbox was killed because PS2 has already win, there was no fight (opposite to now)
and, I am maybe wrong, but GTA andreas was released on Xbox too ?

The PS3 20gb was nixed within 6 months of launch. 6 months?! Think about this - had Sony kept with the 20gb version, the price would be $399 - directly competing with the premium 360. AND ... the 60gb would still be $499. I have had years of experience dealing with Sony and their products - the Walkman, the Discman ... and they smelled blood in the water and bailed.

Sales on Amazon are soaring? For how long? Yeah ... they'll soar until the 60gb B$3 runs out, and then ... back to the norm. Last time I checked vgchartz - right here on this site, the PS3 is STILL a distance third. The bump is temporary - some fools jump at a $50 price cut ... but it's a very attractive deal if you haven't been keeping up. 5 free Blu Ray movie - a $100 price cut - what's not to love? But to the informed consumer, the costs of hard drive space are way down, and it's pretty much the same as the 20gb version as far as costs. M$ is just laughing to the bank ...

As far as GTA ... it was a timed exclusive. That is what killed the Xbox. Why? If you had an Xbox, you had to wait YEARS to play GTA. YEARS. Several folks ended up buying a PS2 just to play it. Gamers will buy a console for exclusive content. Without GTA exclusivity, it would have been a completely different ballgame ...

@Relias - QFT ...

Sony is living off last-gen street cred. They have been shoveling crap so long, and really, really think they can win this battle. Sorry to say this, but ... no, sir. They have to pull a rabbit out of their butt to win this. The Wii is whipping them ... the 360 is steadily holding them off (until the 60gb B$3 sells out) and Sony is still clueless. Lack of exclusive content is what's killing the B$3, as well as lack of games. Who cares about 2008? Bring some games - sick ones - in 2007.

I am ROTFLMBO at folks - uninformed masses on Amazon.com - who will end up playing their 5 *free* Blu-Ray flicks into a coma because of a lack of good games. You can only play Motorstorm for some long, as well as Resistance ...

The games are coming out NOW....Lair ...Heavenly Sword....Haze.....Foklore....War Hawk...Rachet and Clank ....SingStar....Socom...Uncharted Drakes Fortune....Unreal III  are all of just the exclusive games for 2007. Thats not to mention KillZone 2 and Metal Gear that come out early next year and are exclusive.

so the games are coming and I would say by the end of 2007 Sony has an Advantage in exclusive titles.
