Forums - Sales - Sony- what price cut??

madskillz said:
ROTFLMBO ... folks, all you have to do is ... study Sony history. They are just running their standard playbook. If something is underperforming, lie about it, tout how awesome it is doing, and 'orphan' it. I can think of a few products - the PS2 Linux Kit, the PS2 mouse and keyboard, the PS2 Hard drive (remember that?), the UMD ... MiniDisc, BetaMax. Not to say M$ hasn't released duds (Windows ME - what was that crap?!) - Windows CE - MSN TV - but look at the charts - how long has the 360 been out - and without a price cut? Sony smelled the blood in the water and ... yelled 'Man Overboard!' Seriously - how else to you explain the price cut - on the B$3 and the Blu-Ray standalone players? They are getting KILLED - and want to drum up interest.

It's gonna take more than $100 and 5 *free*, rather lame Blu-Ray movies to get me out of my seat. And guess what? The clearance sale is until all of the 60gb models are sold. Then ... it's back to $599 for the 80gb version.

For a company losing money, MS hasn't had to lower the price of the 360 ONCE - nor have they dropped their $299 SKU - the core.

Sony wants folks to think they are getting a good deal. I guess they are, but when you can get an HD-DVD player for $199 ... hmmmm ... I dunno ...

There was only one SKU I wanted ... the 20gb PS3 with hardware emulation. Now? The current PS3s have software emulation, making it of less value to me. I don't know who stated it, but I agree - I want to game, not play Blu Ray movies - not find the cure to cancer via my console - and definitely not *wait* to see games with potential. If I wanted to wait, I would pick up several savings bonds, not a console ...

And the Wii? You wanna know why it's selling like hotcakes? It's a new way to game. Yeah, the graphics suck, but it's just fun to play. The Wii sports game is crack ... it's exercise - it never gets old parkin' a homer or whipping a fool in the ring.

Sony doesn't have a clue about winning this war - price cuts, clearance sales ... am I looking for games or just hanging out at KMart?

Too bad folks are getting duped into thinking this fire sale is a great deal. People, especially B$3 fanboys can say what they want ___________ (choose your expression, please - Metal Gear and GT will PWN all! - or - Lair and Warhawk will move systems - or - @Home is so gonna ROCK! - or - PSN network is free ... and much, much better than Xbox Live) but a price cut/clearance sale - giving away 5 *lame-o* Blu Ray flicks and dropping SKUs are the best way to insure you start off dead last in the next gen of gaming.

Welcome, another anti-Sony fanboy.

Ah...Sony's failed formats.  Here we go again.  Be sure not to mention their CD and DVD formats...I hear they worked out a little better.

Microsoft won't lower their prices, and you consider that a good thing?  Okay.  Probably a reason their sales have barely been better than the PS3s the last several months.

Wii good for exercise?  Eh, ok.  DDR is better for exercise.

You are seriously arguing the great deal the $200 HD-DVD player is?  Really?  Even the Elite 360 doesn't have Wifi, card readers, or free online play.  And yet, it costs $20 less now.  If you add on an hd-dvd player you're at $680.  What a great deal.  If you got the core look forward to 120GB for $180 to even play online games.  Premium?  No HDMI and only 20GB.  What a steal.  $600 with the hd-dvd player, too.

Hey, those are great reasons Sony is ok.  Good job.

PS:  late on the ridge racer joke, they already made fun of it.

This is just so stupid. It's a price cut, end of discussion. Yeah there was a $500 20GB model but Sony never really produced the damn thing and very few places actually sold it, so lets drop the total BS. Demand for the 20GB was awful, just like it is for the core 360 which sells like absolute crap and my guess is will be dropped all together sooner rather than later. They're models early adapters don't care for at all. Something like 98-99% of all PS3s sold are the 60GB model, and that model is getting a drop. I'm no Sony fanboy, but a price drop is simply a price drop. Jesus the haters will go to rediculous lengths.

Jack Tretton said it wasn't a price cut. That should have ended of discussion.

Here's why I see it as a price cut:

The 60GB PS3 is a "complete" PS3, whereas the 20GB PS3 formerly at that pricepoint was not. It didn't have the card reader, it didn't have WiFi, etc. It was nerfed. I'm not going to pay $500 for the CRAP version of a $600 item. I debated long and hard whether to get the $600 PS3, but the idea of getting the $500 one didn't last more than ten seconds.

For that matter, if my PS3 (I did eventually get it) broke down and all I could get to replace it was the 80GB version, I'd face a new conundrum. No Emotion Engine? Nerfed.

No one sees the trick here.

Sony will say, "While Supplies Last" for the 60 gig.

60 gig runs out, 80 gig becomes price of 60 gig with the game bundled.

Call me stupid now, but lets see in a few months.

Minidisc was EXTREMELY successful in Japan. Whole sections of stores sold mini-disc players when I was there.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

The 20gb PS3 IS and WILL ALWAYS be a complete PS3. You can't say it isn't - it has all the features necessary to play games, what little games is has ... but it's a functional machine right now. Sony was the company who said it wasn't ... and yanked it like a bad lil boy.

Like it's been stated earlier - who cares about wifi, a stinkin' card reader and bigger hd space? It's NOT NECESSARY to game. A nice addition? Maybe ... but I am old enough to have seen just how far wifi has come - it's very unreliable compared to a wired connection - and when the wifi radio dies - and trust me - they do quit transmitting (I have 5 wifi routers that just ... stopped working/broadcasting) and guess what still worked? You guessed it ... the wired router part of the wifi router. Funny, huh?

Still, I am old enough also to remember the VHS-BetaMax fight ... and I am not about to hop into it ... for what? A few sharper pixels? Please. I have over 400 DVDs and not too crazy about switching formats until the sharpness is lightyears past the current DVDs ... and it's just baby steps.

And someone earlier called me an anti-PS fanboy - not true. I am a reformed PS fanboy - I know how they operate - got a PS1 opening weekend, a PS2, a PSP opening day, the PS2 HDD kit with Final Fantasy - and close to 200 PS games. I have watched them make tons of mistakes - orphan products - and just release something else ... and a lot of folks have been stuck in the cold, wondering 'I paid my hard-earned money for this crap?!'

Sony is handing the hard-fought crown over on a silver platter.

And price cut? You think that's for YOUR benefit? These clowns have FINALLY ACKNOWLEDGED that the PS3 stateside was on life support ... and said their fire sale would revive it. For some folks, they think they are getting a great deal - wow! 60gb of greatness, and a Blu Ray player? Plus 5 free Blu Ray movies? Where do I sign up? Yet ... it's not a good deal. Sony's jackass decision to include Blu Ray was a horrible mistake.

Guess what? What if MS added *Blu Ray support* to the 360 at the same price? It's not so much prices with fans, but fans want ... GAMES. And Sony, big, giant crabs and all (they should go to the clinic and get that checked), is sitting around, really thinking they are gonna win. They won the PS2/Xbox scrap because of GTA exclusivity. That single-handedly killed the Xbox ...

Ironic that now all the sudden the 20gb is called gimped by the Sony fanboys when just a few months ago it was a great value for those who didn't need a card reader or wireless connector.

LOL ... it was the only version I was considering when they first came out ... then, when I saw the graphics weren't much better, I just gave up. I could see if the graphics were on par with sick PC games, but doggone ... they aren't better than the 360 right now. I'll just get one on the cheap from a frustrated airman or college kid in need of serious cash ...

Windbane:

 1) Sony's involvement with CD was dwarfed by Philips, who still controls the term "CD" and the redbook standard. The reason for its success has more to do with Philips than Sony

 2) Toshiba was the major designer of DVD, with Philips/Sony contributing EFMPlus. Again, Sony had little to do with its success (other than by not creating another format war like Beta v VHS.)

Sony does have a pretty lousy record with formats, and usually only succeed when they don't try to single handedly dominate the development group. Its not because people just imagine this, its because its happened so many times.
