Forums - Nintendo - If one genre had to die..

I'm trying to decide between "Generic FPS" and Rythm Games........ Nah Generic FPS is my choice

Hm, interesting question. But a better one is, which genres are at risk of dying, and why?

There's a common theme in genres that die: they stay static for more than a decade, with only one or two "lead players" and everybody else getting scraps. When that happens, a genre is ripe for a crash or a disruption.

The genres at risk at the moment (from what I've noticed) are: simplified RPG (aka. JRPG), real-time strategy, tactical war simulation (some would say this one's already dead), one-on-one fighting, and simulation.

Sky Render - Sanity is for the weak.

I don't hate music games like guitar hero, but one thing I really really want is more controller based music/rhythm games (ie: Frequency, Amplitude). Since harmonix has made a killing doing GH/RB i doubt I'll ever see another one. :(

Well, they made Phase just last year.

ipod game? Well I never heard of this but definately not what I had in mind.

MMOs need to die they suck the life out of all your friends.

Actually, I'm changing my answer to this. At least the JRPG genre produces the occasional gem, but the MMO genre has produced... pretty much nothing of value, ever.

MMO is not a genre. You are probably referring to MMORPGs, but it's a much more recent sub-genre that only really started being popular 4 years ago. Imo, MMORPG sub-genre has been giving more great games than JRPGs in recent times.

As for the OP, if any genre had to die it would be the Action-adventure genre: Shallow combat and costumization, poor adventure elements, and usually weak stories are the norm.

for the rhythm people: does patapon count? all commands must be timed to rhythm, but yet its a real time strategy game.

my pillars of gaming: kh, naughty dog, insomniac, ssb, gow, ff

i officially boycott boycotts.  crap.

I doubt that any of the genres you listed are in danger of dying.

Tactical war simulations are very much alive and kicking.  See Matrix Games and Shrapnel games.

JRPG?  Really?  I really doubt that JRPGs are anywhere near dying, especially seeing all the XBox360 fanboys going near batshit insane with each new one announced.  And all the PS3 fanboys still trying to convince themselves that the are going to get a JRPG anytime soon.

RTS?  No way.  Red Alert 3?  Starcraft 2?  World in Conflict coming to consoles?  Empire: Total War (has RTS portions)?

One on one fighting?  Street Fighter 4, BlazBlue, SC4, Tekken 6, SF2HD, and others.

Simulation?  Flight Simulator X.  Silent Hunter 4.  Armed Assault, Operation Flashpoint.  Rail Simulator.

This thread should be called "What genre do you hate the most?"

@ Bold
Yep, that's what this threads usually turn out to look like...

Racing sims. What's so fun about them? Arcade ones are way more fun! ^^

Random game thought :
Why is Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 getting so much hate? We finally get a real game and they're not even satisfied... I'm starting to hate the gaming community so f****** much...

Watch my insane gameplay videos on my YouTube page!

FPS games on consoles...I would like all of them to be replaced by third person shooters like Gears and Uncharted.
