1up is stupid for giving it a lower rating because of graphics.
| ZenfoldorVGI said: It's still a great game. Doesn't matter if 1up wants to take points off for "graphics." Sites are gonna flame non-hyped games, randomly. You just gonna read the reviews, and take from them what you can. I knew ToV was exactly what I was looking for after I read IGNs review. Now it is my most anticipated game(well, when it arrives in my mailbox tomorrow, lol). Even though IGN only gave it an 8.2, they praised the hell out of it in the review, and just took points off for graphics. Disgaea 3 will be great to anyone who liked Disgaea 2. |
"Still, while the setting, strategy, and sprite-based visuals -- this wouldn't have been impressive in 1998, let alone 2008 -- are a tad disappointing, they're also all quite serviceable. And as I see it, they're simply the means to an end: Disgaea 3's wacked-out, literally laugh-out-loud tale is the real star -- and of course, you've even got those trademark "heartfelt" Disgaea moments...such as they are. But just when you feel things might get too saccharine, a ruthless one-liner saves the day."
That part right there makes me think they did not mean it recieved a 33 point reduction. They say some damn good things about the game throughout the rest of the review.
Even the closing statement makes me think they did not intend for a score of 67.
"Disgaea freaks will love this game -- that's a given. But I'm sure some strategy fans dismiss the series for its low-res visuals, bizarre netherworld aesthetic filled with near-naked anime-styled demons (of both genders!), and spreadsheet-like lists and statistics. Don't. This is possibly the most accessible incarnation to date, and if you've overlooked Disgaea until now, give this one a shot. Really, it's not as "stupid hard" as they'd lead you to believe...well, not until those level-500 foes, at least."

Exactly. B- = 80, B = 81-85, B+ = 86-89. |
Actually Grading system is kinda like this:
D- to D+ = 50-59
C- to C+ = 60-69
B- to B+ = 70-79
A- to A+ = 80-89 or 90
A+ = 90 or 91 - 100
So Tales of Vesperia would have got 77-79 so basically 78
And Disgaea 3 would have got 70-73 so basically 72 (rounded up)
Edit: It would appear the system is different from place to place!

You must have went to a different school. Here on Long Island scores went.
D = 65
D+ = 66-69
C- = 70-74
C = 75
C+ = 76-79
B- = 80-84
B = 85
B+ = 86-89
A- = 90-94
A= 95
A+ = 96-100
No D-, anything below 65 is a fail. Even though you can't pass on all 65's.
I remember taking my English Regents 2 years early, getting a C+ on it, which came to a 78. When I took it again 2 years later I scored an A-, which was a 93.
I guess that's New York for ya.
May be different now I guess, I graduated back in 2002.

In ToV's case, B+ = 83. I think the letter system sucks to be honest. At first I thought it would go on a F-A+ scale, I guess only C- to A+. Very hard to determine which games to buy this way. Back in school, all those would tell me I received a high enough score to pass. I guess I should just ignore 1UP rating until they fix it... if ever. B+ on ToV made me think 86-89, I thought it was odd enough today when I saw that B+ only meant an 83. Then this... |
1UP does go from an F to A+ scale. They gave Haze a D+, but metacritic took it as a 33. It's pretty dumb though. D+ = 67-69. Well at least Metacritic got it right with MGS4. A- does equal a 91. I don't know why EGM/1UP went with the letter system. It was better when they gave scores by a .5, just like Gamespot. Anyways, if you're a fan of the series, then you'll most likely love the game.

I was actually using the GPA system at most universities and colleges that I know. Either way this system is broken.

Then what is an F then to Metacritic? 0? I guess if a game gets an F, it doesn't exist.

B- should be no lower than a 73 in my opinion. It's still better to use numbers though. But what I don't like is the fact that they still gave it a lower score do to graphics.... some people still love 2d.......
