@dib8rman: I just noticed what you wrote... Imagine the foaming geek to talk to a parent (as there are many of us among gamers), about how Nintendo consoles are for kids, when the parent starts to agree with the geek and tells he's/she's going to buy one for his/her kid and the geek keeps arguing "but it's for kids" (i've actually seen it happening).
@reask: How old your kid is? As HS said, game sales show that it isn't a fad. If you got one and haven't been happy with it, doesn't mean other people wouldn't have been happy.
If you have been paying attention, 3rd parties are putting support to Wii. Maybe they're not your kind of games, but it doesn't mean they wouldn't be supporting it. As for the budgets, if it costs less than half of one PS360 title to develope a Wii title, we are not going to see high budget titles, if they are defined by PS360 high budget.
What kind of games do you personally like then?
@Obliterator: It was just hypothetical talk about what anti-Nintendo fanboys are wishing.
Ei Kiinasti.
Eikä Japanisti.
Vaan pannaan jalalla koreasti.
Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

I think many people do not care about online play. Reasons why I don't like it: 1. I suck at shooters, I hate being reminded how much I suck. 2. Teens and tweens, I do not like them. 3. Hateful language. Yes, I know I can turn off the voices, but then what's the point, I may as well play off line. 4. People starting matches they don't intend on finishing (Mostly an RTS problem) 5. Live costs money. 6. I don't like shooters or sports that much.
Edit: though many, many people are playing Mario Kart and SSBB Online... just go check out their 1000+ post threads. |
Before 360 I was not a fan of online either, MS makes it pretty easy to get online and find friends to play with
Reason why I like online
1. I suck at shooters but most of my friends (30-40 year old) do also and I play with them mostly so when everyone playing sucks we are all on par and its fun! Also I find a few cool people along the way and add them to my firends list
2. tweens and teens is being harsh many are cool a lot are annoying, I play with adults, I post onn boards looking for adult games you could do the same
3. Hateful language is an issue I agree. I dont play with people who do it. Once you buiild up a good friends list this issue goes away mostly. A good host wont put up with it and when I host I boot people after a warning if they use hate labguage
4. Again get a goods friends list and they wont quite on you
5. Live does cost money $50.00 for 13 months thats $3.85 a month you pay for internet access probably like $25-$50.00 a month. Its nice to have the matching and friends list
6. Got to admit shooters are fun online and mostly what I play online so I cantt argue with you there.
PS3, WII and 360 all great systems depends on what type of console player you are.
Currently playing Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Fallout 3, Halo ODST and Dragon Age Origins is next game

Here is an example of why I dont mind paying $50.00 a year for live. R6 I played offfline for a few weeks had a ball I still play it regularly online 8 months later. If it wasnt for online I would have been done with the game months ago it prolongs a games life span

So... either the Wii is a fad in the same vane that the PS2, PS1, SNES, and NES were fads...
Or it's not a fad.
It's already outsold the Gamecube, so I think Nintendo's pretty happy even if it's a "fad."
@obliderator
I'm reffering back to 2003 and 2004 with the massive surge of negative news by CNET and various other refferable outlets that Nintendo was going under and that they would merge with Apple... hmm how can two companies that have seen nothing but profit in those years be going under... wait who owns CNET again... anyway the idea was placed and generally accepted in those years that Nintendo was doing horribly relative to GC sales. This lead into a lot of 'Nintendo going publisher next gen' stigma.
@bdbdbd
Three things, I don't talk about what I don't know - if you talk with me long enough it turns into a debate, I don't take those who use hindsight seriously in conversation, and if someone defines fact through anecdote I'll continue the conversation and omit that inferrence, recently I took up letting the 2nd party know that they used opinion without claiming it was opinion.
Those geeks are vital to whatever they contribute thier moneys to, if it's in gaming then to thier pals to me.
I'm Unamerica and you can too.

Don't get me wrong, I understand why some people really like online gaming.
It's not for me.
I am usually done with a game after 15-40 hours. Not always, I am on my 3rd run through of Super Mario Galaxy. I still play Starcraft and Age of Mythologies, not online but sometimes LAN (I know, crazy). God knows how many times I played through FFIV, VI, and VII.
Probably a hundred hours into TF2 on my friend's account, which is about the only online non-MMO that I can think of.
Oh, Scrabble Online.
I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.
Some quick thoughts.
The Wii has 27 Million Sellers, 13 of which are third-party releases. This is more than the PS3 and is about equivalent though slightly below to its ratio (8 of 15 third-party). The Xbox 360 has more Million Sellers and a higher third-party ratio (33 of 42).
Two notes about third parties. Microsoft came on the market first, so making games for them first was natural -- and those games could often easily be ported to the other HD console, the PS3. Meanwhile, Nintendo's Wii was expected to fail hard (not a fad but a flop), so few people got behind it. Some are moving in that direction (somewhat now).
If you remove Microsoft's head start, Nintendo has sold more than the PS3 and Xbox 360 combined since its release (30.91M vs. 30.20M). That is pretty remarkable given the expected outcome.
Finally, with only exception that I could see, the people who still feel the Wii is a fad are in the 18-24 age demographic (this is based upon the profiles being correct). This is not surprising because that is the group that Nintendo has decided to target less as part of its Blue Ocean strategy. If Nintendo had made games a high percentage of games that appealed to that age cohort at the expense of games that appealed to others, it would still be in third place and still being called a "kiddie console" by the 18-24 year olds.
In closing, if you say the Wii has no games for you, that is fine. But if you think the Wii is a fad, it is my belief that you are sadly mistaken. Only time though will tell which position is correct. But it is trending in favor of the Wii.
