Battery research is both slow and verrrry expensive. Although I am not discounting that they will 'make a better battery', it is much easier said than done. Granted, a lot of research is going into them now (especially for plug-in hybrids, etc), so maybe there's been a breakthrough I haven't heard of.
I'm not holding my breath though.

what do they have to research? Forget which university it was but some US university invented very tiny lithium wires that can make a battery three times smaller but last 30 times longer.

And you think that tech is going to appear in consumer goods immediately?
You have to factor in the cost of production, which is likely high and will require extensive research and testing to bring down to a level that would make it practical for consumer goods. Then you need to run tests to find out how the tech performs under real world conditions, like high and low temps, humidity, etc solving any problems that may arise. Then you need to do testing to find out how long a better like this would last due to the effects of corrosion, charge cycles, ect.
Its a lot more work to make something like this viable for the consumer market than just issuing a press release.
