All those are irrelevant, it isn't HD because Ninty wanted it that way and look at the results.......lots and lots of money.

Nintendo took the only route available to them because they knew that they couldn't compete with the competition in that regard.
It paid off, at least, it has done so far...

i dunno why people hate nintendo ?
they made the analog stick, the rumble, bla bla bla bla if i go on it will never end..
i love nintendo as a company cause they make my games and they are what saving the gaming industry till this day. small developers would never survive, and all the games will be only games with big names with bad game play, like IMO RE5.. i cant see whats the difference between 5 and 4.. 4 was awsome.. but i wont play 5 so i could feel that im replying 4 : /
i wonder much the hd consoles could get on screen rendering in sd
@Onimusha: Nintendo sticked to cartrige in fear of piracy. They still do control the specific medium the games are in, since Nintendo is the only instance that makes legit Wii discs.
Besides, Nintendo already had its tries with CD:s with SNES CD-ROM, which eventually got scrapped (maybe because of the MD equivalent flopping).
@Dmeister: CD in these days? Bad capacity, bad transfer speed and long search times for its size.
Even if DS had flopped, i doubt next Nintendo handheld would have used discs, cartriges are so much more practical especially in handhelds.
@OP: About the number 3, it's something that Nintendo started to think when they started making N64 games. Costs and dev times rised so high, when compared to SNES games.

Vaan pannaan jalalla koreasti.
Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

Except CDs were more versatile and much cheaper than Cartridges. Nintendo didn't stick with Cartridges because the industry wasn't ready, they stuck with them out of stuborness and control over the medium their console used. Cartridges were harder to develop for, they were more expensive and they had less space. They had no advantages what-so-ever outside of Nintendo's control over the format. The situation of CD vs Cartridge couldn't be further from the current situation of HD vs SD. It's laughable you would even try to compare these two situations completely out of context like this.

Thank you! I was cringing from reading DMJ's post and I'm glad that I didn't have to suffer through writing a reply myself.
Really DMeisterJ, that makes no sense at all. HappySqurriel's list makes all the sense though, and it explains many of the things which are happening in the industry (financial results, multi-platform games, sales, public perception...).
PS: The Wii is not SD, it's ED (Enhanced-definition). It uses progressive scan, 480p. SD is 480i/576i.

How many normal TV's are in the world and in kids bedrooms compared to HDTV? Why build a console for a tiny fraction of the market or the whole market?
I know you can run a PS3 or XBox 360 on a normal TV but why bother replacing a PS2 until you have an HDTV.
Therefore the market of new people to gaming and the majority of the existing market has no need or use for HD.
BTW I have my Wii plugged into a 50" HDTV and it looks great and is fun.

I'm just telling ya that for now I've only encountered a max 128MB, but the most common DS games tend to use between 32-64MB cartridges, only a few actually use 128MB cartriges. Now I have read about the new dragon quest game on ds would need 2 cartridges, so it would seem logical that if there going to introduce a larger capacity cartridge that this would be the 1 game to have it, but I read that info long ago so I don't know if it still holds true. Would you give me the link to the info you found, I'm quite curious which games actually use these higher capacity cartridges, thanks. |
There are already half a dozen or so Japanese games and a Cooking Guide thats in various regions on 256MB carts. These include:
Cooking Guide - Can't Decide What to Eat (Is out in about 7 or 8 languages. Strangely, the Japanese version is only 128MB)That's what I can see from my quick look, so there may be a couple more.
Wii in SD is quite the turnoff for someone who has an HDTV. It looks nasty.

Not on my Hdtvs, especially if you use component cables. I only heard it looks nasty on LCDs. I only noticed a few jaggies on y one plasma, and my other tube? I think thats it. I do hook it up to my Computer monitor also which is a 19inch lcd, and I think its pretty unnoticable because of the smaller screen size. Also Jaggies aren't really a big deal imo. Especially when you are far away from the TV, and the TV isn't above 40 inches. They are barely noticable. I would rather superior graphical features, and higher framerates in 480p than the oposite in 720p.
