How many normal TV's are in the world and in kids bedrooms compared to HDTV? Why build a console for a tiny fraction of the market or the whole market?
I know you can run a PS3 or XBox 360 on a normal TV but why bother replacing a PS2 until you have an HDTV.
Therefore the market of new people to gaming and the majority of the existing market has no need or use for HD.
BTW I have my Wii plugged into a 50" HDTV and it looks great and is fun.
