@Onimusha: Nintendo sticked to cartrige in fear of piracy. They still do control the specific medium the games are in, since Nintendo is the only instance that makes legit Wii discs.
Besides, Nintendo already had its tries with CD:s with SNES CD-ROM, which eventually got scrapped (maybe because of the MD equivalent flopping).

@Dmeister: CD in these days? Bad capacity, bad transfer speed and long search times for its size.
Even if DS had flopped, i doubt next Nintendo handheld would have used discs, cartriges are so much more practical especially in handhelds.

@OP: About the number 3, it's something that Nintendo started to think when they started making N64 games. Costs and dev times rised so high, when compared to SNES games.
