Forums - Sony - Why do sony still use disks

How many games do you think 360 owners will be able to fit on their drives??? Their max space is 120GB...... now lets throw in Lost Odyssey and FF13.... games are getting bigger by the way....

Guess it could work if most of your users have and can use huge external terabyte drives.

yeah the whole game install thing is overrated. there won't be much benefit compared to the disc, since buying discs is cheaper than buying hard drives to fit them in.

I rather have disk.... If my ps3 ever broke no way would i want to have to reinstall every game. I think its fine if they did this with every game but they need to release a disk too...

The being able to install games on your HDD is not that big of a plus if you still have to have the disc, IMO. It would be completely different if you didn't need the disc.

The amount of time it would take to install the entire game would be less than the time you would save from installing it.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. I recently descovered that you'll be able to install your entire game onto your xbox360 to improve loading times dramatically. But seeing as the ps3 uses core technologie and has an upgradable hard drive wouldn't it seem obvious to just download games onto the ps3 as well, instead of using disks.

I don't understand the appeal of filling up a hard drive when you've already got the thing on disc. I'd much rather just play off the disc, load times don't bother me but sitting there installing an entire game collection onto a hard drive definitely would.

I agree... simply downloading games is not a good solution. With the massive ammounts they take up and the fact that I cant go out to the mall and look around for them ( :P ) takes away a lot...

Vote the Mayor for Mayor!

I hate downloading...I agree with Ferret.

Fact is, only those with an Elite 360 will get any advantage, 20gb is nothing, even 60 is pretty insignificant for installing full games

That's far from being factual. Every 360 owner with a hard drive will get an advantage. Even if you can only install a single game, it means reduced loading times, reduced noise, and less wear and tear on the DVD drive.

I read that it takes around 10 minutes to install a full game to the hard drive. If you're just going to play a game for half an hour to kill time it isn't worth it, but you have the option to play every single game without any kind of forced install. If you are sitting down for several hours to play a game, or you're concentrating on completing one particular game over a number of days, then of course the install is an advantage, regardless of hard drive size. Also, you could install one game and still play any other straight from the disc - you wouldn't have to delete the game to make room for an install unless you chose to.

I'm wishing for the day when any console game can be downloaded, as soon as disk capacity allows for it.

1- It will make games cheaper (i.e. less or no middlemen between you and the publisher);
2- no ruined discs spoiling games;
3- no spinning drive noise;
4- shorter loading times
5- more durable console, especially if solid state storage is used (such as flash memory).
6- more environmentally friendly

There are also some disadvantages, such as not being able to loan/sell games, but if the games are at least 30% cheaper, sign me up.
