IGN Nintendo's Most Anticipated Games of 2008 Revisisted
Sorry, Wii Music isn't on the list.
August 1, 2008 - At the start of 2008 each editor on the Nintendo Team took to the task of picking ten games that they were most looking forward to for the year, be it on the Nintendo Wii or Nintendo DS.
Now that it's August, half the year has gone by and several of the games that we were anticipating have seen their releases. And with the Electronic Entertainment Expo come and gone, several other games have made themselves known…many of which have done their best to make it on our lists. We also can't forget that 2008 marked a year where the Nintendo Team grew by one: Daemon Hatfield gets to cut his chops with his premiere Top Ten list.
Enjoy.

10) Wario Land: Shake It! Genre: Platformer Developer: Good Feel Publisher: Nintendo Why?: Nintendo's old-school platformer may skimp on a true 16:9 presentation -- a pet peeve of mine -- but it definitely does not come up short where fun, engaging play mechanics are concerned. Hold the Wii remote classically to control Wario through a series of traditional side-scrolling 2D levels full to brim with good old-fashioned platforming challenges. Fluid hand-drawn animations and colorful worlds harken back to some of the 2D platformers I grew up with (and adored), and the new Wii remote controls are usually used well within the context of the game. In short, Shake It! is hardly a revolutionary experience, but it does remind me why I play videogames to begin with: pure, simple fun. |

9) Animal Crossing: City Folk Genre: Simulation Developer: Nintendo Publisher: Nintendo Why?: The Animal Crossing franchise will make its long overdue debut on Wii later this year with gameplay mechanics and an overall presentation similar to its predecessors. While I had hoped that Nintendo would revitalize the franchise with fresh innovations -- it seems to play and look the same -- I'll still be first in line to explore City Folk when it finally hits. The prospect of moving back to town and interacting with my neighbors is just too enticing. And it's not like Nintendo has done a copy / paste. City Folk uses the Wii remote's IR for navigation and menu surfing. There's a robust four-player online mode. And the game utilizes WiiSpeak so that I'll be able to chat with my friends, too. |

8) Little King's Story Genre: RPG Simulation Developer: Cing Inc Publisher: XSEED Games Why?: Read our official description for this game sometime and you too will be convinced. "The makers of Wish Room, Harvest Moon, Chulip, Final Fantaxy XII and Dragon Quest VIII team up..." Uh-huh. Little King's story promised to jump you into a truly stylized 3D world filled with rich characters and gorgeous settings. Your goal is to become king and manage your kingdom -- expect a satisfying mix of RPG elements and simulation-inspired challenges along the way. The more I get to see the game in motion, the more I'm convinced it's going to be a truly unique and standout product when it arrives later this year. |

7) Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09 All-Play Genre: Sports Developer: Tiburon Publisher: Electronic Arts Why?: Ah, yes -- the Wii remote and the promise of the one-to-one swing. Lots of potential, sure, but few developers have really capitalized on all of it. But Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09 All Play comes really, really close to finally nailing it. Swing the Wii remote back and Tiger's club will follow; swing forward and he'll do the same -- in near real-time. With updated graphics, a new four-player online mode, and entertaining Wii-specific mini-games like ball battle, this year's Tiger is great fun and I really can't wait to play it at length. |
|
6) Prince of Persia: The Fallen King Genre: Action Developer: Ubisoft Casablanca Publisher: Ubisoft Why?: Ubisoft has spent nearly two years developing this completely stylized DS-exclusive Prince of Persia platformer and as a fan of the series, I'm really excited. The colorful new look and simplified 2D presentation have me itching to sit down and have a go. The mix of traditional and new controls has me intrigued. And the promise of some really good platforming, not to mention enemy battles, make this latest entry one of my more anticipated handheld games -- even, that is, if I'm not totally sold on the newly redesigned and aged-down look of Prince himself. |
|
5) World of Goo Genre: Puzzle Developer: 2D Boy Publisher: 2D Boy Why?: The only WiiWare game to make my list, World of Goo is a simple, beautiful puzzle game in which you must use the Wii remote to connect balls of goo in order to build bridges and platforms to every level's exit. Really, it's a concept that's petty easy to grasp, but the process of actually advancing through the stages -- especially as they ramp up in difficulty -- is much more challenging. The game's gorgeous graphics and excellent controls combine for a truly standout WiiWare experience that I can't wait to play from beginning to end. Put this one on your list now, if it isn't already. |

4) Deadly Creatures Genre: Action Developer: Rainbow Studios Publisher: THQ Why?: Sure, the developer of Deadly Creatures may have some -- ahem -- bugs to work out. The framerate remains jumpy. The camera occasionally fails to shoot the action appropriately. But damn it, you control both a tarantula and a scorpion, and you travel through deserts, caves, bathrooms and gas stations as you attempt to uncover the details surrounding a mysterious murder. Yeah, you'll fight off a rattlesnake along the way, but you'll also have to escape man himself. Great presentation. Excellent graphics. One of the best soundtracks in any Wii game to date. And I just love the premise. I'm hoping it all comes together because there is immense potential here. |

3) Guitar Hero World Tour Genre: Music Developer: Vicarious Visions Publisher: Activision Why?: I'm looking forward to the technology powering Guitar Hero World Tour nearly as much as I am the game itself. This time around, there are 85 new songs, an excellent new Music Studio that enables you to create your own note charts (which can be traded with friends), eight-player online and, of course, downloadable content. The Wii version has it all thanks to the hard work of developer Vicarious Visions. The title uses the Wii's SD Card to store and read DLC, hopefully pioneering the end of Wii's storage issues. Guitar Hero III sold best on Wii and it didn't even boast stereo sound. I think World Tour is going to really rock us. |
|
2) Moon Genre: FPS Developer: Renegade Kid Publisher: Mastiff Why?: I'm officially dubbing Renegade Kid greatest up-and-coming developer. The studio has already released the under-appreciated DS first-person shooter Dementium, a title with great controls and a slick 3D engine. Now, it's underway with its new DS-exclusive, a game called Moon. As a science-fiction geek, the premise had me from the start. Mankind discovers an alien hatch on the moon, goes down, and all hell breaks loose. But the developer has upped its already-winning tech with an even more polished 3D engine and ridiculously tight control to boot. I'm dying to sit down and go hands-on with the game without any time constraints. And I can't wait to see Renegade Kid's Wii project. |

1) de Blob Genre: Platformer Developer: Blue Tongue Publisher: THQ Why?: The funny part about my most anticipated game is that it would've been lucky to make my top five only three months ago. However, in my last play test with de Blob, I was blown away because the graphics and polish had all come together, matching the already standout gameplay mechanics. You control Blob, a gelatinous ball who rolls through a monochromatic city painting color to every building he touches. There are all sorts of fun platforming challenges. A superb soundtrack that dynamically changes as you play. And truly spectacular graphical effects -- some of the best water and particles I've seen on Wii. Bottom line, though, is that the experience is simple fun -- almost intoxicatingly so. de Blob also couldn't be a better match for Nintendo's console. |
