CVG writes: "Satoru Iwata has said he was unsure whether he'd be fired before Nintendo's campaign to expand the gaming market was successful.

"In my first year as president my ideas met scepticism, also within the company," he said to German website Spiegel online.

"I was lucky that it worked so quickly. For a long time it wasn't certain what would happen first: That we'd have success with the new console, or that I was fired."

When you try something different, you are putting yourself at risk.

Looking back on Nintendo's success, it is easy to see the brilliance of their strategy. But it took great vision and conviction to move in the opposite direction of the rest of the industry. This was a high risk and reward scenario that many industry analysts though would end in failure for Nintendo. If that had been the case, Iwata surely would have been fired.

With Nintendo's success, I think that Iwata has proven himself as a great business man.
