Forums - Gaming - How does the PS3 remain as the only unhacked system? And for how long?

@kingofwale: I didn't know about it until I read the thread. Did you notice that I said "apparently"? However, a quick search on Google reveals that it seems to be true. Just google it and stop begging for links ;)

Nothing is unhackable.

And why are fanboys offended by pirates? Are you guys getting paid?

There are too many gates that have to be passed, if you want to hack your PS3. You have to chip your console, get a BD burner, get clean BD disks, and be able to move huge quantities of data.

A big plus for Sony, towards publishers.

And even if hackers manage to pass all their gates, Sony still has a secret weapon:
Every HDtv set has a piece of hardware that checks the source of what comes through the HDMI port. They don't use it now, but IF pirates hack the PS3, they will. So if you play a non-original game through HDMI, your HDtv will say: "you're not coming in through here". So you'll have to chip your TV also.

And believe me, few people will do that.

So in the end, Sony vs Pirates: 1 - 0

(and it's also one of the big reason the film industry will start to push BD a lot more when the holiday season starts.

That's not what HDCP does. (HDMI is only the cable; HDCP (high-def content protection) is not necessary for implementation of HDMI, but is required for the playback of source from HD-DVD, blu-ray, etc.)

HDCP has nothing to do with the TV (display) policing the source.  You can connect any sort of device you want to an HDCP-enabled set, and it will work fine; there's nothing special about HDMI that means it can't be used to connect it to a computer, for example.

HDCP is *only* for verifying the display to the source; the source (ps3) can choose to say "oh, this monitor doesn't have content protection; we're not going to give it high-definition video so that it can't record it." [This is also the reason GameTrailers is forced to do their comparisons in 720p instead of 1080p, as an aside].

Please, PLEASE do NOT feed the trolls.

well i think the ps3's where you can play games from your hdd is for developers and game testers since i've seen that in several videos. Like in firmware videos and such.

I have checked at countless of tracker sites and i havent found on single ps3 game. There was one at a private tracker ,but apparently it didnt work(judging from the comments)

I'll believe its hacked when somebody can find a torrent file for a ps3 game which works.

Well then one would just use the Composite Cables then. Composite does 1080p just fine and the ICT (Image constraint Token) does not apply to games. ICT might downscale copied movies to 720p under composite cables.

The whole point of hacking a gaming system is to be able to do something on it that you isn't being done already. When it comes to homebrew games and emulators, most of those will run just as well on PS2 or PSP as they would on the PS3, and no one has teh sheer funds needed to do something on the PS3 that actually can take advantage of all that excessive architecture. sony has also been the best known for releasing firmware updates that are almost purely with the intention to block homebrew, as shown on the PSP.

Nintendo has been most vocal about Piracy, but has never really been vocal as far as Homebrew alone goes. The only update we've seen to the Wii firmware that blocked anything only did a minor and temporary block to homebrew, but the biggest thing was blocking a lot of pirated discs and discs from the wrong regions.

Plus there's also a creativity level. People aare going to generally be more inspired by Nintendo's console, who has a lot of really interesting hardware with a lot of creative potential, but it's all potential that hasn't been tapped into at all by developers.
That's the type of situation where a person can get a lot of recognition by just being a little creative and actually thinking through how the input methods should work. Whereas the PS3 is basically all power, something that requires a lot of funds and manpower to be able to take advantage of.

The PSP was big because it was basically being seen as a portable media player that has games, and a lot of the updates just add more media support.

The DS and Wii get a lot of support because there are completely new inputs to play around with that can be used in really inventive ways that just aren't being used.

The 360, I haven't really heard much about as far as hacking goes, but I'd assume much of the reason behind that is because it was the first of this gen to be released and it's made by microsoft, who has made a name for themselves when it comes to security holes.

PS3 has been pretty much the most expensive, it's not portable, and doesn't do much more than the PS2 when it comes to things that independent, nonfunded people can take advantage of on a cost effective basis.

 I have looked into the subject a lot a few weeks ago and contrary to what you find on Google the PS3 is definitely not hacked yet. Or if it is, it is definitely not release publically.

There are a ton of false promises and fake "hard disk loaders" but if you go to any hacking forums everyone is saying that loaders are stil incoming and not released yet...

They say that someone managed to hack a developer ps3 that has fewer checks for pirated material in order to test beta code, but as of late the most promising hack was for firmwares before 2.10 and that wan't released either.

Apart from a few "hello world" youtube videos there is nothing released yet and google serches confirm this.

PSN ID: T_Gears

End of 2009 ltd sales:

Wii = 67-68m

X360 = 38-39m

PS3 = 34-35m

Prediction: The PS3 will surpass the 360 on weekly sales after it drops to $299 on all regular weeks (no big releases).

I love certain people claim PS3 is hacked and can play games via harddrive. and yet to fail to supply a link.

I wonder to myself. How could xbox fans such as NJ5 or vaio know about this. while a PS3 owner such as myself being completely 'out of loop'

1. I am not an xbox fan, have always said if I am a fan of any company it would be Nintendo

2. I wouldn´t put a link here because piracy is not looked upon very nicely here and I wouldn´t want to get banned.

3. If you have some google skills that are above average you will find the liks you are asking of very quickly.

4. The person I am talking about is a friend that used to hack things together with me in the C64 days (i haven´t since then but keep my self updated through him mostly)

5. This hack isn´t 100% reliable and that is why it isn´t let out to the main public and you have to have some skills to be able to use it. Also this hack is not a way to a mod chip in any way, if you want a modchip then you will have to find another way.

This is how far I am willing to go, if you want to dismiss my answers as bull because you are too lazy or just can´t find the links then do so. I just answered a question and I ams still amazed that almost only PS3 fans are ignoring the answer.

The reason it hasn´t been hacked (hacked as in a chip ready) this far at least for the hackers I know is that it´s to expensive to play around with a PS3 ( my friend went through 3 of them allready and his team went through 7 or 8) and  the price for blue ray discs thats why my friends and most other hackers as far as I can tell went into the harddrive thing.

If they are correct then it´s just a mutter of time before they actually make it stable enough but since the popularity of the console at the moment isn´t that high it´s not a prioroty, they put more time with homebrew scene untill demand for PS 3 raises and then their prioroties will change.

even if someone were to showyou a link where they play game of the hdd. It could still be a developer kit. i've seen poeple do it in firmware videos.
