Forums - Nintendo - Good post-E3 Ninty editorial: "How could they do this to me?"

We've gotten more traditional games out of Nintendo on the Wii than we got on the Gamecube at the same period from launch.

True. Nintendo fired out of every barrel in its first 15 months. But this doesn't change the fact that the 6-9 months will be thin for fans of classic games (Unless there are some new surprise announcements). I think its just fair to criticize Nintendo for this. The Delaystation was criticized for its first year without any games as well.
On the other consoles third-party devs jump to the rescue but these also have the casual gamer in their target on the Wii.

Considering Nintendo's new announcement strategy, and the fact that they listed Kirby for an '08 release, it's possible they still have another game or two to announce. I doubt it, since they have one Wii game a month coming out for the rest of the year, but it's possible. Even if it isn't, though, they're still bringing Fatal Frame IV over this year, as well as Wario Land, and third-party offerings on the system are actually pretty strong. I'll freely grant that there's no Mario-esque game there (although Animal Crossing is going to be huge in itself), but from where I'm sitting there's still more games coming out than I can afford to buy.

I think Nintendo has already lost many of it's core fans, myself included. Wii's problem is the same as Gamecube's and N64's problem which is lackluster third party support. They are heavily dependent on first party titles to satisfy core gamers. That's why when they are at E3 and no Zelda or Mario games are announced, Wii owners can tell that it's going to be a long road. Sure there will be a few gems here and there: Wii music, some no name FPS, but watch resentment grow as your PS360 owning bretheren get an onslaught of massive big budget, high definition, mature, gripping, games from every genre. Games come out every week on PS3 and 360 that would be killer apps on Wii.

Let me make a prediction: The earliest you will see the next Zelda game for purchase at a store will be 2011-2012. Think that's crazy? It wouldn't even be the longest Zelda gap there have been longer ones in the past.

I tell you this in all honesty as a Longtime Nintendo fan who's not really all that impressed with Wii sales because I was alive and gaming during the NES era, when Nintendo was ALL there was and consoles like the master system were NEVER mentioned in schoolyard conversations, and EVERYONE was a Nintendo fanboy. THAT was Nintendo domination. The Wii might be the best selling game console of all time but units moved have nothing to do with quality. McDonald's sells more burgers the most fancy restaurants but where do you want to eat?

This really should have ended the Nintendo E3 crap a long time ago, but yeah, for some reason people are intent on continuing to bitch.

One thing that surprises me that people have missed about Nintendo's long standing release strategy is the number of games they try to release towards the end of the year ...

In a typical year, Nintendo releases a big (in relative terms) game in August, September, October, November and December with 1 to 3 smaller titles that are released through out this timeframe; on occasion one of the bigger games may be delayed, which leaves a (somewhat) weaker line-up. If Nintendo follows a typical pattern they will have 6 to 8 titles that are going to be released between now and Christmas. The games we know about are Mario Super Sluggers (August), Wario Land: Shake It (September), Animal Crossing: City Folk (November), and Wii Music (November).

Now, I could be wrong, but both Mario Super Sluggers and Wario Land: Shake it do not seem like the type of games Nintendo would use as their "Big" titles going into the holiday season (I could see an emphasis on Animal Crossing and Wii Music though). What this has me expecting is at least 1 big title (or possibly 2) for Nintendo to be announced for an October or December release and potentially 1 smaller title (or possibly 2) for a September, October or December release.

Is this Wario Land for WiiWare or disk?

Um, shouldn't this be titled "How Could This Happen To Me?"

You know, possibly subtitled with "I've Made My Mistakes, Got Nowhere to Run, The Night Goes On As I'm Fading Away"?

Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.

Well it would if Nintendo had bothered to tell people BEFORE the convention instead of letting them get their hopes up.

Who's hopes?  I told people from the start it was going to be a boring E3 from everyone, Nintendo included.  Not my fault no one listened.

Good for you.  You get a pat on the back.

The problem is that the internet is full of people who predict more random things every day... and no one cares.  It's when Nintendo says things themselves that people should (and do) listen.

Nintendo should be careful about what they do with their "core titles"... They can release all the "casual games" they want I don't care that much but we "core gamers" are the ones that purchase their games and console generation after generation, not the "casuals".

I really hope they don't dumb down the next Zelda... :(
