You are incorrect, these numbers are 100% legit coming from sony themselves, jack tretton announced the ps2 had sold 143 million consoles since its launch to this date, at there press conference, also he added that 140 million of those ps2 sales, are from consumers, Therefore, you are incorrect, and are NO ONE to question these numbers

I'm not going to argue with you about the other points in your misinformed post, but at the very least, you are completely wrong with the bolded statement. There is no way Sony can know how many consoles are being sold to consumers. That's why places like this site exist.

Agree. Compared to PS2, PS3 will start making money and sell really well later, this would be bad if Sony had a short term strategy, but having a long term one it's OK, simply PS3 will need a life at least one year longer than PS2 to obtain the same success.

One thing I would add: dropping BC on PS3 will extend PS2's life, so the goal to exceed PS2's sales will keep moving, only a PS4 with a Cell evolution, able to give PS3 BC for free and PS2 one with very little overprice will put PS2 to rest.

@mike_intellivision: keeping Cell architecture, PS3 BC should come almost for free, so why not? While following Moore's law, PS2 BC will be very cheap in 5 year. A totally BC PS4 would let Sony drop PS3 whenever they want or they see the time fit, without concern and worry about continuity of the brand.

In the first quarter of 2008, 2.39 million PS2s were sold. According to Reeves, 127 million PS2s were sold before that. Assuming they sold around another 2 million since March 31, there seems to be an 8-9 million unit discrepancy.

Again with leo-j you can track my ip for all I care, its a FACT I am not leo-j, Anyhow, Watch the conference, and watch the gametrailers, interview with jack tretton, he announces that the playstation 2 has sold 143 million consoles world wide to date(I believe its shipped), then he is questioned on the interview as to why the ps3 will win this gen, and he states that he has an army of nearly 140 million ps2 consumers. This indicates, that not only have they reached the shipping number of 143 million, but consumer sales are near 140 million.  You can spin it however you'd like, but the FACT remains, the ps2 has shipped 143 consoles, coming from the company itself
