why lose money and profit by putting an emotion engine in a ps3 when people are still buying like 100k ps2s every single week. Sony did not turn into a billion $ company by losing out in money (Most of the time)

It doesn't cost that much to include backward compatibility. They already have the software running on the soon to be extinct 80 gigs. Yes, they do make money on the PS2, but sales are going down and the lack of backward compatibility for most PS3s has hindered sales. So a good point is that too many people are buying PS3s and loading up on PS2 greatest hit games. Thus not making the royalty money that Sony is used to. I mean, do you think graphics are enough to spend $60 on Madden for PS3 or $40 on Madden for PS2? That's a lot of money to pay for usually less options, only better graphics.

He said it better then I could have. Sony isnt taking out BC to save the PS2's Hardware sales, its doing it to Save the PS3's Software sales. Too many people are buying PS3's which Sony looses money on, and then not buying PS3 games, which Sony makes money on, but PS2 games which Sony makes much less money on. So take out the BC and people have to buy PS3 games for their PS3 and help Sony recoup their losses.
I own all three current consoles and a great gaming rig, now thats out of the way.

"is it Wii FIt that has sold as many as PS3's sold? Thats a LOL Look at the total sales of software is it just me that sees Nintendo titles hitting 10m+ and you say they arent making a difference? Another LOL!"
"Hell, with all the negative hype Sony spin, people just aren't interested cost is too high and to get the true HD experience (1080p, 7.1 surround) you will need a $1000+ system. THAT IS GOING TO DO IT IN A RECESSION! PS4 will not happen"

This is indeed another theory.
The current 100million ps2 owners however will not buy a new ps3 just because they can play Madden 'upgraded' , these ports are nowhere near as interesting as new games made for ps3/xbox exclusively. Sony wants people with ps2's to upgrade to ps3. In the current trend these people will still have hold to on to their ps2 and will probably keep on buying ps2 games. Sony cannot expect that every ps3 they sell, they sell to a completely new console-owner... So they decided to conquer 2 markets : the current (ps3 expensive/exclusive) and the previous gen (ps2 affordable/large database/not so hardcore). Since Sony doesn't really make haste to sell their ps3's (there are hardly any ads to be found over here), they have got and will take the time to profit the most from their 2 consoles. Personally i think that in 2 years they will somehow install bc in the ps3 and then end ps2's life...
Their once was a time when games were not BC compatible. It was Sony and then Nintendo (GB to GBA to GBC to DS) that started making systems with BC in mind. Even DOS based games had to surrender to Win98 games in the day. Either you hold on to your old equipment and games, or you sold it and moved on.
PS3 non BC only hurts them with consumers who are not tied to them by their blind loyalty to their PS2 consoles or games.
any way pretty much everybody have a ps2.
worldwide people don't care, just users who didn't bought a ps2, and i don't think thats a huge part considering the ps2 marketshare
I think BC is more motivational then perhaps sony is giving it credit for right now. I've got a 60gb and I'm really glad that I managed to pick one up. I know that if I didn't have BC in my PS3 then all my PS2 games would be colllecting dust. Not everyone wants to have all their systems out on display, especially when they don't necessarily have to. I know that my entertainment cabinet is already full and I wouldn't have room for my PS2 even if I wanted it there.
I really hope that they'll be able to do full SW BC in a future firmware update so that even the 40/new80gb people will be able to enjoy this as well.

I think the problem is that the PS2 is not a reliable system. The PS3 is. So people have either had their PS2 break or see the day coming when it will break. These people would rather purchase a PS3 and make the jump now then buy a PS2. While new games are better for the PS3/xbox several people are still picking up older PS2 games that they missed to wait for price drops on new games.

What about those of us with dead PS2s? I don't want to buy another one. I'd rather buy a PS3 with backwards compatibility. I'm certain that I am not alone.
