Forums - Sales - Do Ninty/MS/Sony Get Royalties for Third Party Games?

Microsoft gets royalties for any game that comes out on 360.
Sony " " " " " " " " " PS3.
Nintendo " " " " " " " " " Wii.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

If there is a game engine that is developed by Microsoft, it could mean royalty payments if used / ported to a game on another platform. I am not aware of Microsoft making any libraries available that could be used on other consoles besides the XBOX, but it's not beyond possibility.  Microsoft also has several software patents.

There could be royalty payments for a game if Microsoft owned some of the technology (hardware, software, or patent) ...

Like HS said, there could be royalties involved for a company that owns an IP or franchise, that goes multiplatform.

IE, Microsoft owns Rare. If Rare made a game on the......DS, Microsoft would most likely get a cut of the profits that Rare makes.

However, since Rockband nor Guitar Hero are owned by a company that is then owned by a major hardware company, his point is moot.

On the other hand, should Rock Band break some sort of exclusivity agreement with MS (should there be one there), MS could profit from that in some way.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Yes, but he thinks MS gets royalties for EVERY game sold, including Guitar Hero sold on Wii PS2 PS3 etc. I should of clarified more.

MS doesnt get royalties for other platforms obviously.

But if a game gets published by Microsoft e.g. Mass Effect and comes out on other platforms, then they get royalties.

Sony gets royalties for every X-Box and 360 game sold. They are founding members of the DVD alliance, so they get some money for the format.

These royalties are actually called licensing fees. The publisher pays that to the console manufacturer in order to be allowed to sell a game for that platform. So publishers DO pay Microsoft. It's probably around $6,- per sold game (PS3 $8,- / Wii $5,- these are rumored amounts, no facts).

But your friend is of course wrong that Microsoft owns Guitar Hero or that they won't show 3rd party games.
