Forums - Nintendo - Testing Wii Speak microphone with Mario

Source

While checking out Nintendo's first-party games at my appointment, I had a chance to check out a PR person playing Animal Crossing: City Folk on the Wii with... well, with Mario and Luigi. Yes, the characters looked like Mario and Luigi, and, in a fun twist, the company had Charles Martinet, the voice of Mario, spirited away in a back room interacting with whoever was playing. Hearing Mario greet you as you walk into your appointment is a little jarring, to say the least.

All this voice chat was happening courtesy of the USB "Wii Speak" microphone, placed on top of the sensor bar of the demo Wii. What was impressive was that, in a loud room filled with the sounds of many people enjoying their demos, the speaker was able to pick up my voice from around ten feet away as I talked to Mario in a normal speaking voice. I had a comfortable conversation with Martinet, and we had no problems hearing each other or understanding what the other person was saying, even in these less-than-ideal circumstances. In other words, the Wii Speak speaker is a pretty nifty piece of tech.

The design isn't final, and right now it simply rests on top of the television or sensor bar, but the ability for the microphone to pick out voices amidst so much background noise got my attention. This might not be the gimmick it first appeared to be.

As usual, it sounds like another qaulity product from Nintendo. I hope the libraries for this are very simple so games start to use this right away. Here's also hoping for some sort of backwards compatibility. Please let it work on Mario Kart....please....

This would have been great for Brawl...2v2 games online with my friends could be much easier and more fun with voice chat.

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

^yeah if only they release an update to make it work with brawl

Yeah the amount of insults and taunts would make it a funnier game...

By me:

Made with Blender + LuxRender
"Since you can´t understand ... there is no point to taking you seriously."

Is it possible for Nintendo to incorperate this into games that are already out, like Brawl and Kart?

Also, I'm glad to hear that the speaker works so wonderfully. I knew it wouldn't let us down. Nintendo knows what quality is!

One question though, why doesn't my Wii sensor bar look anything like that? mine is just the skinny black part, so how the hell am I going to put the Wii Speak on it? That sensor bar they have hooked up looks a lot better than mine...

Notice how big it is in comparison to the USB connector?  I think the image from the article was just a bad perspective that made it seem a bit bigger than it is.

If that isn't the case and it is way too big for your sensor bar then I highly recommend some double sided tape.  In fact this is how my sensor bar is currently attached to my television.  It holds it on there nice and snug without ever sliding, tilting, or falling off.
