Forums - Sales Discussion - The Ps3 Just Died but not because of FF13

Personally i do agree the PS3 has now just taken a mortal blow but not because of Netflix.

Japan doesn't matter this gen because the PS3 isn't selling there neither is the 360.
But in NA this will probably spark the end of the PS3. I would expect July NPD to be a very bad month for it.
The reason is simple. There are few reasons now for people to pay double to play the same games. There are fewer reasons now to buy a PS3. And in NA the gap is 7m and increasing if VGC sales are true. There are no games on the horizon for the PS3 that make you think i'd better rush out and get it. Where as the 360's numbers just keep increasing. The Fallout 3 download thing shows this. It is very much like what happened to Gamecube which i must remind people actually sold 21m units, double almost what the PS3 has.
Europe is a place that is neck and neck so again i can imagine FFXIII will spur on sales on a cheaper machine. I'm from UK and more people play 360 here. I know that FFXIII going multi-platform here will lose Sony a lot of consoles sold.

As someone else pointed out Sony are winning in Worldwide sales per week. But that number is around 20k a week, 100k max a month. That is tiny. And looking at the figures you see that the PS3 figures are actually decreasing. All it takes is something big to rock the boat which further decreases PS3 sales and increases 360 sales and once again the PS3 is on the back foot. The problem for Sony is then what is on the horizon to re-shift the trend in their favour? At this point in time not much. Tommorow will be vital for PS3, if they come out with few new exclusives and talk of games years away like the previous 2 E3's then that will probably be it. If you watch last e3's your see they delivered on only one of their titles. The rest got delayed. So they are under massive pressure now, they have to give people a reason to part with £300 for a console, they have to give a reason to pay more then a 360 and Wii combined. Killzone 2 and Resistance 2 are not enough.

Sorry dude PS3 has outsold 360 by over a million plus units this year and yes it has outsold the 360 in NA this year as well.

PS3 sales in NA this year = 1.68m

http://vgchartz.com/hwtable.php?cons%5B%5D=PS3®%5B%5D=America&start=39453&end=39628

360 sales in NA this year = 1.69m

http://vgchartz.com/hwtable.php?cons%5B%5D=X360®%5B%5D=America&start=39453&end=39628

so 360 has sold more. A console that is a year older is outselling a new one.

PS3 sales in the world this year = 4.9m

http://vgchartz.com/hwtable.php?cons%5B%5D=PS3®%5B%5D=Total&start=39453&end=39628

360 sales in the world this year = 3.7m

http://vgchartz.com/hwtable.php?cons%5B%5D=X360®%5B%5D=Total&start=39453&end=39628

So the PS3 has sold more worldwide this year. But those sales haven't been in NA. And in europe PS3 sales are on the decline. So as i said it is like with the Gamecube. They need to re-spark sales/interest in the PS3. It needs something with the same impact today has had for 360 where everyone is flooding forums talking about it. They need to start shifting games as right now there software sales are reading like a horror show.

My God ,Netflix is a joke. You have to download the damn film and can only store it for some days.

You really think something like that will win any war?

Br numbers have increased by 500% year over year and keep growing each month.Thats how a format starts to make itself ,not some Netflix download.

As for the price cut....its clear its a clearance sale of the 20Gb models. So ....in few weeks the 360 will have a beautiful 60Gb HD and just the same price as now.

you don't have to buy each movie you watch on netflix though..... Isn't there a flat rate?

And also: don't blu-ray films cost 30-40 $? Oh wait, they do!

Guess what sparkie: You can rent bluray movies on Netflix at no extra charge!

I'll take that bet. In fact, it's going to be an unusually good month.

With the price drop the other day making a 360 a rasonable purchase, Consumers who have held back might get one. But the deal with netflix is what will put that machine in many peoples homes. Content delivery is the next step, not Blu ray. It looks great for new movies but very little differnce in anything older.  Being able to stream anything from netflix will be the major selling point this christmas.  Add to that a library that leaves Sony in the dust, Exclusive GTA4 features and Gears of war will Make the 360 the system to buy this winter. While some Sony fanboys will say the ps store will be great , Xbox live already is. Its smooth and well worth the 4.50 a month. There is nothing Sony can do at this point except watch their system sit on shelves this winter. Ps3 has died taking Blu ray with it. The average consumer does not want to spend 35 to 40 dollard on a disc when it is 154 at walmart.

The problem with fan boys on both sides is they only see their system from their point of view and not the average consumer. With netflix and some very big holiday exclusive titles this will be the system for the average consumer to buy. Its to good of a deal.

Sony has had every chance to make their system a winner and have not done one thing right to sell it. I almost bought one so I'm not some 360 fanboy. I don't post as much as sony fans since I am busy actually playing games and not blogging about ones I will play if they ever come out.

You haven't even seen SONy's conference and your already saying they died??? Screw you! Your no better than a fanboy!!

Netflix's online play isn't worth the time as only a few selected good (old) titles are available. Most of the blockbuster titles are disc only.

I have a Netflix account and I barely stream the movie online because the selection sucks.

Thats too true. Same with me. The problem with online streaming is all media doesn't have the rights to be streamed online. There is still a lot of time for the online libraries to build up to the level of available physical media. Watch out for Sony taking some initiative with online media services via PSN next.

What are you talknig about? There is no price drop for the Xbox360. There is a new SKU with 60 gig hard drive that will sell at the same price as the Pro. And the existing inventory of the Pro will get discounted by $50, but as soon as they run out, prices will go back to the same. I think you should check your facts before you make sweeping statements. And by the way as LeetGeek pointed out, I will be watching blu-rays from Netflix on my PS3 at no extra charge, I tried out the movie download service on Xbox360 and Netflix online and really, the collection sucks.

lol another one of these threads! i love how insecure people are that whenever theres a pricecut or any sort of news, several threads appear saying "OMG PS3 is dead" or "OMG 360 is gonna get owned". ive yet to see any of these threads that convince me that the race between the 360 and PS3 will be anything but very close.

sony is annoucing the same kind of thing, NEXT.

Its funny, with all this talk of how good Live is, how many of you xbox 360 owners even buy all that stuff thats available?

Well, considering they've made over $1 billion on downloads, somebody is.  Besides there's over 20, 000 pieces of content, so I'd say no one has bought "all that stuff that's available."

Can't we all just get along and play our games in peace?
