I should really read the full article, but am I to understand Stinger considers the PS3 a Blu-ray player?

I mean I understand what he means about niche and the Wii, he's basically saying it has only one job, but then he sais the PS3 isn't competing and goes so far to explain that the PS3 is a Blu-Ray player.

Sooo.. it's confirmed then?

Ps3 & Wii don't compete because:

Wii = Gaming niche
Ps3 = Blu-Ray everyone

I'm totally confused though... since when did a storage medium have mass appeal?

Sony needs to go back and understand why DvD became popular - it wasn't because it was a DvD or that it stored more information than a CD.

In those days the mass market was fine even now with CD storage DvD just became cheap and easy to acquire, the difference between it and a CD was much smaller and it happened virtually the same time as the CD explosion.

If anything Dvd take off wasn't a fluke it was what the market wanted, it just so happened that Sony fluked and rode the bleeding edge to profit; that's usually something Microsoft does. (By fluke I'm throwing in their perception of Blu-Ray being the same as DvD back then.)

Until consumers decide that they wan't everything Blu-Ray then it's not for everyone - it's niche.

Having read the above, the statement isn't half as bad as it was made to be during the beginning of this thread. In fact it was clearly taken out of context...wayyyyyyy out of context!

All Stringer said is; the console offers a lot less for the price it goes on sale for- which actually is true. No next gen graphics, smallest HDD, no blu ray, no blue tooth and no option to view hi def movies and no where near as many options as a PS3 for various memory devises to be used (CF, Microstick DUo). 

So, taking the statement into context, if you put the consoles next to one another and see how much it would cost to have a Wii which offers what the PS3 or 360 offers (adding a decent sized HDD, Blue ray player etc), the Wii would be far more expensive.

So from the 3 consoles on offer including what the consoles actually offer, the PS3 is by far the most value for money!

I know some people won't understand what I am saying here so I have an analogy which would help.

If you buy a Ford Focus, it will be nice and it will be cheap. Many people will be happy etc. However, you buy a S320 Mercedes, it will cost you more, but the luxuries and options it will offer will be far higher then the Escort. if the Escort were to have these same luxuries, it would be equally priced if not, maybe even more expensive.

The owners of both the above would be happy regardless of price and any in differences. Reason is simple, if you want the extra's and you can afford it, why not? You don't always need the latest gadgetry and top end specs to have fun. The Wii is a prime example of this. its cheap and cheerful. It's simplicity has allowed people who are unfamiliar with video games to actually enjoy video games. Nintendo has just opened up a whole new target market of potential buyers and claimed that empty gap for themselves to be filled with nintendo's Wii's. 

I look at it this way, Stinger is trying to tell his investors that they aren't being thwomped by the Wii because they aren't competing. But by simply using the word expensive niche device one has to ask what he's comparing the Wii to?

The Vii? The Mwii? There is nothing else like it on the mass market.

He goes so far as to say that Blu-Ray means the difference, clearly this is a marker for Investors to bail out. Sony's investment isn't in the gaming industry it's in technology and technology is not the retail industry that gaming is.

Gaming needs people to play games and technology needs gaming to be sold to people.

I was hoping Sony would go it's own direction though - this probably means no Wii-like controller at E3 also. Blu-Ray won't take off until boot leggers see a reason to buy the medium.

For now bootlegers love compressing to DvD.

Howard Stringer used to be my favorite executive at Sony because he didn't stoop to mud slinging, spin and PR rhetoric but the past year he's been just as bad as the lowest PR rep on the totem pole.

that made me laugh out loud. haha... while i agree its been done before  etc i still think its worth posting because i find it interesting seeing the way other companies shut theyre eye and stick their fingers in their ears and yell "BLAH BLAH BLAH IF I CANT HEAR YOU OR SEE YOU, YOU CANT HURT ME AND YOU DONT EXIST!"

I don't like the arrogant attitude of Sony.

I'm thinking about getting a PS3, but men like stringer stop me from buying one.
