Forums - Nintendo - Where is Super Mario RPG 2!?!

Yes normally on these boards I'm kind of down on the Wii for being overly casual and kind of rehashing old games as their mainstays, but I was posting on another thread about Square's glory days and remembered the greatest game ever to grace a Nintendo console bar none.

   Thats right, Super Mario RPG!

That SNES mix of Square and Nintendo was by far the most perfect synergy of everything I like in games put together I have ever seen.  It wasn't the best pure RPG of all time, but it was by far the best hybrid.  Every time I tried the paper mario games I was newly saddened with just how badly they pale in comparison to the awesomeness that was Super Mario RPG.

It sold well and yet, well over a decade later, no sequel, what gives?  Square and Nintendo have made up, Square is making games for Nintendo consoles again...if you're going to remake every SNES game ever to feature a Nintendo character (Zelda, Mario, Mario Kart, Metroid, ect ect) why not remake the best one!

We may disagree with the relative merits of the PS3 and Wii, but I think most of us can agree on one thing;  Super Mario RPG 2 on the Wii is way too good an idea not to go forward.  Instead of all these remakes and crap spin offs the DS and Wii keep getting (just like the Gamecube got Crystal Chronicles instead of a proper FF game, ugh) they should consolidate all their Nintendo teams to making the dream of Super Mario RPG 2 a reality.

After they finally get it done, only then can I look at my Wii purchase the way I looked at my SNES purchase from the minute I put the original Super Mario RPG into the cartridge slot, as a shining beacon of pure gaming win.  I wouldn't be surprised if Super Mario RPG 2 made the normal teal ring around the Wii DVD insert turn a brilliant glittering gold organically just from how awesome the game inside the console was.

At least they could make the original available as a Wii marketplace download if nothing else...

You only realized that the SNES is pure gaming win when it was already five years into its lifecycle?

Super Mario RPG already got an ESRB rating, so it's probably coming soon to Virtual Console. Probably even in Europe where it was never released in the first place.

if it was never released in europe then they might call it in import and charge a bit more for it

They made it for the N64.
Its called Paper Mario, thats the squeal they said (wikipedia) D:

I own all of lastgen systems as of October 2008. (Finally got a Dreamcast)

I own every currentgen system except PS3.

Yeah but Wii owners don't like good games!

I still need to play the first one, hope it comes to the VC.

I wouldn't mind if it costs €2 more than usual, although I don't see why it would. The game already has English screentexts, so it doesn't take any efforts to put it on the European VC.

that was the same case with sin and punishment it already has english vocie acting but they still charged extra, but SM:RPG might be worth it

Paper Mario is NOT super mario RPG, it isn't even a tenth as good. It is somewhat funny yes, but the gameplay isn't half as good, the story is non existant (the Super Mario RPG story was actually pretty good), the party and fight dynamics in Paper Mario pale in comparison ect.

The difference between Super Mario RPG and Paper Mario is the difference between laughing at and laughing with. Super Mario RPG was a legitimately great game with some humor, Paper Mario is like a caricature of Super Mario RPG without all the good parts. Its like Watching Spiderman (which had its funny moments, but was great besides that) then watching Super Hero Movie. Not that Paper Mario is horrid, but it's not even in the same league. It's like comparing Mario Sunshine to the rest of the Mario action games.

I already did like the SNES before Super Mario RPG, but Super Mario RPG was the first game that was REALLY loads better then NES games (I never got into the whole genesis does thing, I never bought a non Nintendo console till FFVII went to PS1 in 1997). Most of the RPGs for the SNES were a lot like NES games in terms of game play and graphics (compare Final Fantasy 4 to late gen NES games for instance), Super Mario RPG was the "wow this is way better" game.

Like it or not, Paper Mario (and Mario & Luigi) pretty much are the sequels to Mario RPG. If you mean another Mario RPG co-developed with Squaresoft, that may be possible in the near future, but Square-Enix rather has its hands full at the moment, and has already been outsourcing a ton of games. So don't expect it in the next two years (or four, considering how quickly Squeenix works.

@RolStoppable: It's all but certain to come to Europe, so if you haven't played it yet look forward to it.

I agree with the OP. I was so shocked when Nintendo claimed Paper Mario was the sequel of Mario RPG. I thought the graphics sucked compared to the SNES game.

How many cups of darkness have I drank over the years? Even I don't know...

Hum...Super Mario RPG got me into RPGs, but it wasn't that good...
