The biggest problems were the price and launch library. Both have been corrected and Sony is doing much better. I think it is a foregone conclusion that Sony will finish number 2 this generation.
Thanks for the input, Jeff.

No, it's not. They're doing far better than anyone could have predicted last year, but they still have quite a distance to go, and anything can happen in the next several years.
I definitely think this holiday will be the critical point for both of them. Kind of like the mid-level boss that shows how prepared they are for the final climax.

i dont think so. i think it is a "forgone conclusion"... because ps3 has been sell more then 360 this whole year.... and 360 is much cheaper. when ps3 gets a price cut of just 50 bucks its going to sell even more pass 360.
You cant win with only one market... and thats what 360 is trying to do.
The run for 2nd place is won in japan and just about in "others" if sony keeps selling at this paste (which they will) then its pretty much a given.
The last thing is sony can lower the production cost of hardware like no other. So those who think sony will not react after 360s US price drop this month if it rasies sells a lot are pretty much dead wrong.
I think the two biggest mistakes off the bat were the $600 price (definitely turned me off) and the lack of breakout games at the beginning of the PS3's life. They were probably there, but not as prominent as the Wii Sports thing, and the 360 was already out for a year with a library of around 100 games.
The loss of exclusives hurts a lot to the Sony fans, but there are still plenty of exclusives coming up. PS3 is on the rebound, and is slowly closing the gap with the 360. However, it still needs more AAA advertised games, even though it has many games over 70% in Metacritic average.
O yea, Welcome to VGChartz Blackstar.
Leatherhat on July 6th, 2012 3pm. Vita sales:"3 mil for COD 2 mil for AC. Maybe more. " thehusbo on July 6th, 2012 5pm. Vita sales:"5 mil for COD 2.2 mil for AC."
As long as sony is not the next Sega Dreamcast... im fine with it. At least games are coming this holiday like Socom Confrontation and RFoM2
I think one of the biggest mistakes Sony made leading up to this generation was to release the PSP ...
I think announcing the PSP and (planning on) releasing it 18 months before Nintendo was expected to replace the Gameboy Advance really caught Nintendo off guard. Nintendo knew that they could not let the release of the PSP go unanswered and (at the same time) knew that people would not let them just do a straight replacement of the Gameboy Advance; their solution to this was to experiment with a drastically new user-interface and claim that it was a third-leg of their strategy (leaving them open to do a straight replacement of the Gameboy if it failed).
The fact is that the DS didn't fail, was fairing pretty well against the more powerful and expensive PSP, and Nintendo was seeing some very promising things from internal developers which led them to hint at a similar approach for their home console at E3 2005; after that the meteoric rise of the DS lead to the Wii being what it is today ...
In other words, I'm pretty sure that Nintendo's disruptive strategy was far more of a reaction to the threat Sony posed in the Handheld market than an organic movement within Nintendo; had Sony not cornered Nintendo I don't think they would have released the Nintendo DS or Wii, and without the Wii on the market the PS3 probably would have faired better even though it was a higher priced peice of hardware.
sure, i think everyone knows that Sony has made big mistakes with the ps3, but i dont think Sony's main goal was to continue to dominate the gaming industry
their main goal was basically to win the format war with blu ray by including blu ray in their console
of course, they have accomplished that, and now they have a lot of work ahead to gain some marketshare again in the gaming industry.

Apology accepted. This kind of thread has 1 million clones.

Everyone says that the PS3 has no chance to do any better than 2nd place... last year everyone said that for sure they will be the last. If they cut the price to 299(but being profitable) and released a Wii-like controller that appeals to casuals (but with many 1st party games to start with), they could compete against the Wii.
